Hah! I wondered when I'd finally meet some more locals. :-)

We both have been wanting to do a GTG for awhile and this seems like the best distance from Neverland. :)

I'm hoping that we (I) have the energy to hike one more short hike to either Crabtree Falls, St. Mary's Falls or White Rock Falls all of which have easy/moderate hikes. All three are just off Hwy 56 near Steeles Tavern...but I haven't decided which one we will do that afternoon. It might be that we are just to blooming tired...hmmm

Jimmy isn't sure yet if he will go with us or not and I'm not sure about Wendy...Barry said he was planning on going back sometime after lunch.

Depends on how dead I am after the first set and how embarrassed I am at being so far behind everyone. :)

naw... I bet you won't feel a thing. But it would be nice to have company as I'm failing miserably at keeping up. :)

It's supposed to be an easy/moderate hike for Rose River Falls. So fingers crossed...at least I/we will find out what the definition of "easy/moderate" is...lol

ETA: Thank goodness I will be able to do some "conditioning" (stop snorting) before I get there...we are camping in NC near Mt. Airy @ Stone Mountain State Park...

easy/moderate = killer, guaranteed! You tell me when it's over if I wasn't right!
Oh and thanks (all) for the invite but I won't be able to make it this time. I know
that you are in good guide hands with Barry. Hope every one enjoys their visit!
Can't wait for pics!

I may regret this (forecast: hazy, hot and humid with a chance of afternoon thundershowers ... I don't even have to look it up to know that ... summer in VA is very predictable LOL), but I'm in. I'll probably head home after the morning hike so I don't have to deal with afternoon rush hour going home. I'm allergic to rush hour traffic ;-)

toddhead and I will have to take a rain check on the GTG. My son made All-Stars and he has practice everyday leading up to the tournament. Sorry all, I hope you all have a great time and I am sure there will be sometime to meet in the future.

ALERT:

What are the chances of doing this on Wednesday or Thursday? Just talked to Ja-9 and looked at the weather. This is the forecast for Tuesday:

Scattered thunderstorms. A few storms may be severe. Storms may produce large hail and strong winds. High around 85F. Winds WSW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 60%.

With a 60% chance of rain, it's not looking too promising.

Wednesday and thursday are rain free, high of 84.

Ja-9 asked me to post this... What do you think?

Wednesday is a no for me...but I could make Thursday.

How about making it the week starting August 2nd? I just bought airline tickets for my son and me to fly into DC and back from August 2nd through the 9th. I've been watching this thread to get and idea of where we might go for scenic drives, hikes, whitewater rafting, etc. from the 2nd through the 5th before we finish the rest of our trip in DC through the 9th.

Actually, I don't think that you can postpone the GTG that long, but keep me in mind and let me know what will be worth us visiting after you've checked it out. In addition to the activities that I mentioned, I'd definitely like to get some good cascade photos, not giant waterfalls, but rather some small waterfalls and cascades that I could get some shots of.

Robert - Usually there's a DC GTG every year. Haven't heard anything about one recently...maybe you could get something started? :-) There's quite a few DPCr's in the greater DC area.

If you end up finding your way into central VA, let me know.

Well, we survived. :-) Had a good time. Great to meet everyone.

Pic's to follow sometime in the near future. :-P

wow...back in the land of internet!!! Won't be home until tomorrow...but at least I have some service..

really had a great time...Robert I got a book on waterfalls that has been both very accurate and written by a photographer...Waterfalls of West Virginia and Virginia. I would highly recommend it. I will also be happy to tell you about some of the falls that I visited. Probably the best one that has loads of cascades is Sandstone Falls in West Virginia...more information later

It was so much fun meeting everyone...had a blast, although I will say I was a little pooped...but survived. As a matter of fact for the next 3 days we got in some really good hikes so now I just need to keep it up. Thanks for suggesting the location Barry...it was really fun.

Thanks for the book recommendation, Janine. I'll keep checking this thread for more info, ideas, and more pictures of course.

Now that's what I've been watching this thread for! Nice waterfall and cascade shots.

Could you please list the locations for these beautiful scenes? I look forward to visiting places like these in just over two weeks from now.
