Now that I'm going to start college soon I need to keep working on learning programing. I was going to start this July but I had to go in the hospital Monday and did not get out until Thursday. Having to keep my foot elevated for two weeks is a good time to think of another way of presenting User Stats. I have combined the DPCStats (old version) with the Yearly Ranking to come up with a way of ranking users by PERCENTILE (yes...to much time on my hands!).

The question was what is the best way to rank users, Average score vs. Percentile. Since each challenge has a personality of it's own with varying entries it seemed that ranking users should be done by percentile. But what if a user only entered 1, 2, or 3 entries in a year and has percentile average higher than an user that has entered 10, 15, 20 or more challenges in a year. The solution - the users will be ranked by their yearly percentile rank but must have 10 entries or more in a given year. The overall average percentile rank which will include all challenges from the first to present challenge will also have a 10 entry minimum.

I hope all enjoys the "Yearly Rankings by Percentile" stats. I have years 2002, 2003, and 2004 completed. I'm currently working on 2005 to present. I should have the ranking up to date soon. Then I will update monthly.

You can view here. It will start with year 2002.

Enjoy!
Scott

It will be interesting to see the final results. Not sure I want to see mine lol.

Good luck with going back to school! What are you going to study?

Thanks. I'm going for my AA/AS in with a concentration in Information Technology/Programming.

Awesome!! (but I think you should start from present day and go backwards. Who are those people in 2002!!??)

:D

One of the neat things about this is seeing a LOT of folks who were around in the early years are around and still active today! Kind of defeats the myth that noobs grow up here (at least photographically) and then grow away.

Hey Scott!

Since you're doing it for programming -- what would be really cool is if you could link their names to their DPC profiles. I'd love to look at the list, and be able to click their name and see their stuff.

When I get caught up I will try to do that.
Thanks for the good idea.

It's interesting to note that in 2004 (the last year itemized thus far) 655 individuals entered 10 or more challenges. As compared to 490 in 2003 and 211 in 2002... I wonder where we peaked, and how much we've slid back now, if at all?

Good work, Scott!

R.

My numbers don't line up exactly with Scott's but we're in the same ball park. This was from a quick scan through my database so no guarantee of accuracy :-). Here's what I see as a peak and decline through 2010. I haven't done a recent 2011 export.

Seems like 10 represents an infrequent participant as it's less than once a month.

Mend quickly Scott!

2005 has been added. A lot of well know users are showing up on this list.

NOTE: I would like to thank Michelle colorcarnival for her kindness in offering me a year membership. Thank you so much.

I know that 10 sounds low and yes its less than 1 per month. But you have to remember that by using >=10 entries is already leaving out almost 8000 users that has entered less than 10 per year. I would hate to see how many would be left out if I raised the # of entries.

Thanks

The slight difference is most likely in the way we determine the fist and last challenge of the year.
I go by announced date. If the challenge was announce on 12/31/2004 even though it will not be voted on until 2005, I consider it a 2004 challenge.
You may be going by the end voting date.

Thanks,
Scott
