so i have had this problem lately with the brats in the neighborhood ringing door bells late at night and waking the kids up, so have others i hear. its so random that it could go days or weeks between it happening again so waiting for them isn't practical. I'm thinking about stringing up some fishing line so maybe the brats will trip and fall and bust their teeth on the walkway.

any other ideas to get back at them?

I am sorry this is happening to you. But, just ignore them. They'll outgrow the bad habits. Retaliation will only buy you grief, because no matter how good your lawyer is, the attorney hired by the parents of the children will be better. This situation is taught in many business law classes.

Get one of those fake outdoor cameras, and put a sign up that they are being recorded.

Pulling fireworks.... Tie a few around with that fishing line... Shouldn't trip them, but might scare them pretty good..

Although... If it were me and you did that you'd become my favorite target...

Perhaps a giant glue trap.... :)

ETA: You could actually wire up a few real fireworks with fishing string trip wires.... The trick is to use a 9V battery and a fishing string trip wire connected to a slip contact with a rocket engine electric igniter encased in a bit of powder and cellophane tape wrapped around the fuse.. Just don't go overboard, I'd suggest a few artillery shells at most(pointed up of course! and don't forget to cover the top of the tube with thin plastic wrap!) and a couple of carefully placed m-80's or a string of firecrackers at least... :)

And yes... I love pranks.. I've been at this for a long, long time - I have done all of the above quite a few times (except the giant glue trap anyway), but I cannot and do not take ANY responsibility for your use of this information. One piece of critical advise re:safety... Don't hook up the battery until EVERYTHING else is in place outside and safely aimed. Another good idea would be to ensure that there is no possible way an idiot could hurt themselves with this, that's the biggest thing, don't hurt someone - you'll get sued into poverty..

+1 Excellent and might work.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but until these pranksters break a law, you have no legal recourse. There's nothing you can do. Been there... done that. The existence of a doorbell on your house implies a right to walk onto your property to ring the bell. I wish you could set a boobytrap and retaliate. But, there are many personal injury lawyers who would love to represent a client who suffered loss of quality of life and a stolen life-long stream of income because of your wrath and vengeance. Doesn't seem fair, does it? Those punks violate your space and destroy your peace and quiet and there's nothing the police will do until a law is broken. I support vigilanteism, but I wouldn't bet on a vigilante winning a personal injury law suit, even if the kid just lost one eye from a freak accident.

Purchase a sprinkler that is set off by a motion detector! As the kids walk up to the house they will get soaked. They sell them to keep geese off of peoples properties.

Yeah, now there's a winning idea! Just hope one of the little shat heads don't trip over the hose... *facepalm*

If your bell is wired to the main electricity supply try rigging it so a bare wire is exposed... result an x rayed prankster. ( I take no responsibility for any law suits that follow if you follow this through)

Add a little dye to the water then you'll see who it is during the day too!

Ha...I had about 5 or 6 kids playing on my back porch (with lots of glass windows) a few months back. They would trample the grass and plants at times. We were out of town for a week and when we came back we found that the power had been pulled. The alarm company did call to tell us they had a power failure signal. However, this is not very unusual in this area and it is usually restored in about an hour.

When we returned we found that the power was shut off and all food spoiled !

I bought a $150 IP Camera from Newegg.com. It plugs into the wall and hooks to your wifi. I pointed it out the back windows. The first day we left town I got an email alert with a photo of the kids hanging on my back porch. Well anyway, the cam videoed them for 3 good minutes while they were jumping around my glass playing with their toy guns. They played until one of them took a look through the glass and saw the cam. It even recorded the sound...the kid said..."this dude....this dude....this dude has a camera in there"....they all were stunned. They made a few faces and then hauled ass out of there. THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN RECORDED ON THE CAM AGAIN.... and it has been a good 8 months or so!

I still have the vid.

the kid were all under 15 so I don't know if I can legally post it for public views. I have it on youtube but it is marked private.

Buy a cheep P&S camera and start a project.
Take the camera apart and make the button you press to take a picture you doorbell ringer button. then mount the camera above so it will take a picture with a flash when they push the button. Data will show the date and time they did it and the picture will show who did it.

A quieter doorbell might help - wish I had one.

A flash when the button's pressed - halogen bulb will do, just so they think it's a flash gun.

If you get a monitoring camera similar to those that show who's outside in appartment buildings etc, then turn the little screen outwards so you can see it where you press the buzzer, they just might think they're on CCTV.

Still n all, if kids waking up is the problem and gin in the milk is not an acceptable solution (joke), then maybe whatever generates the sound of the doorbell/buzzer could be dampened/muffled/repositioned.
