So I did mine a little early.... :)

Just do one! Even if it's to gather old photos and reprocess for a book, it will get you started. Gotta do something with all your photos!

So, for those who posted about making books, have there been any sales??

Melethia?
Skip?

not for me, but i didn't do it for sales. i did it for the experience, the education, and to have something i could flip through. it was more than worthwhile all the way around.

No sales other than to me but I am buying multiple copies for friends and family who have requested them.

I did sell some!

A school one, without any profit. It's not easy to make a book in 3 weeks with photos of 10 photographers (including me), with all having comments and getting the last photos on the last day before the deadline :) Still, it was a fun thing to do and looking back, there are some great photos in it. Almost forgot the link: //www.blurb.com/books/1700492.

Made also a nice one of my Photo-a-Week in 2009: //www.blurb.com/books/1125544. Had some sells too (I think), it's difficult to get a good overview. Have to spent more time on that. Anyway, the sales are just enough to buy 1 egg :)

Addition: and soon of course my SoFoBoMo one :)

Thanks for the reminder, I signed up earlier in the year and forgot all about it!

Hmmm ... didn't even know about sales ... :-(

I'm intending to do one, but I have to actually design and lay out a book for print in the next month, so I'm not sure I'll have time to do it properly.

OOh, you are good! I haven't.

I just read the fine print, and it says you can change your topic later. I was kind of bugged because it wouldn't let you sign up without entering your start/end dates -- I have no idea right now when I'll be able to start shooting ... :-(

The sales are nothing to do with SOFOBOMO though Paul, it's just some people who may have used Blurb or Lulu, have offered their books for sale. The project itself is about shooting, editing, processing and compiling a book all within the 30 day window.

Yeh, it's just for fun! Kind of side challenge :) Having a bad start tomorrow. My first action is to get some new reading glasses. Just broke my current one and I can't do without it :(

Yeah, I kind-of figured that out from some later posts. I did do a book for the 2009 project, but couldn't get it together to finish last year.

And isn't that just exactly the comparison that hajeka would use.

my is done, but i can't upload it, yet ;-)

(there may be a challenge entry or two in there...)

and there's still plenty of time to do at least one more.

fwiw, i shot 400 images in 30 minutes, spent an hour weeding down to 160-ish, spent another hour weeding down to 90-ish, then spent about 2 hours processing for high-res prints. lastly spent about 3 hours in InDesign laying it out. altogether less than 8 hours and i've got a nearly 100-page book. not a bad way to start off the month.

Yay Skip, way to go! Looking forward to seeing it. My fuzzy month is starting on August 1st. But in reality it's from 15th to 31st so I will need to be fast in the editing and processing phase.

Nice work Skip! Although I started on July 1, I certainly need a couple of weeks to get just the minimum of 35.

Way to go, Skip. You have this drill down pat. I'll look forward to seeing your book when you are ready to show it off.

I'm still taking pictures. There's a small village about 45 miles away, agricultural, and some art, and that's my project. I was down there early yesterday and again today with a long lens and a short one. (Try being inconspicuous with those.) But it was today before someone pulled up beside me with the old familiar "whatcha doin'?" I passed muster, fortunately.

Actually, I'm smiling as I write this, because they really are very, very nice people in that little town of Pescadero. and if/when I go down again to finish up, I'll be sure to buy a loaf of freshly baked artichoke bread from one of the local stores.. They bake it several times a day.

unfortunately, no challenge entries. typical...
Genesis Revisited

good luck to everyone else! can't wait to see 'em!!!

fwiw, i use adobe InDesign. they have a 30-day free trial and i highly recommend taking advantage of it. if you have a free blurb account, you can download their InDesign templates (again, FREE), and they really make the book making a snap. for this one, all i did was create the book, open an explorer window and selected all the images, and then dropped them one by one onto successive pages. (this wasn't one of my more complex undertakings, but it was more than adequate for this book.)

if you have any questions, please feel free to pm me.

Lovely, Skip. Made me feel as if I were there - without the noise!

What's the difference between this and Blurb? (I mean in usability and quality)

PS I went through their site and still don't quite understand what it does - is it just a competition or does it also offer software tools and a printing service (like Blurb)?

Margaret it is simply a group event. It's not a competition and has nothing to do with Blurb. It's been something folk on DPC have been involved in as one of the organisers, Gordon McGregor, used to be a very active member on DPC.

What is SoFoBoMo?

SoFoBoMo is a group event where photographers all around the world make solo photo books in PDF form, in 31 days, start to finish.

A lot of photographers have considered doing a book, but various concerns have stopped them. Heck, the same concerns stopped us. We worried that our photos weren't good enough. We worried that we didn't have enough photos. We worried that we couldn't write decent text, or couldn't do a decent job of layout, or that we didn't have the time to do a good job.

SoFoBoMo gives us (and you) an end run around those fears. There's no requirement that the photos be good. (but we suspect you'll be surprised by how good yours are if you participate). There's no requirement to have any text at all. And there is no requirement on quality of layout.

The requirements for the book are:
it must include at least 35 photos
it must be completed in a contiguous stretch of 31 days, start to finish, and the 31 days must all fall inside that year's two month 'fuzzy window'.
the book must take the form of a PDF file, which can be uploaded to the SoFoBoMo website.

Participants in SoFoBoMo become part of a wonderful, world-wide community of supportive photographers.

History

SoFoBoMo was conceived in January 2008 by Paul Butzi, and developed by an international group of like-minded people including Amy Sakurai, Andreas Manessinger, Bill Saltzstein, Bryan Willman, Colin Jago, Gordon McGregor, Martin Doonan, Matt Alofs and Paul Lester.

The first SoFoBoMo ran from April 1, 2008 to May 31, 2008; there were 210 participants and 70 completed books. Participants registered by leaving a comment on a blog post, and later left comments telling where to find their books on the web. (Things were pretty informal that first year!)

SoFoBoMo 2009 ran from May 1, 2009 through June 31, 2009, there were 885 participants and 218 completed books. Participants registered on a website designed and implemented by Bernie Sumption, and if they completed books, uploaded them to the same website.

Skip, that's a fun book. Well done on getting it done so quickly! You've got time to do at least 4 based on your speed with this one!

@sarah: thanks, but i think two is going to be my limit ;-)

@alice: thanks, alice!

@margaret what it does is to offer a framework and support system to encourage photographers to go on and make a book, rather than shooting to fill up harddrives with never-to-see-the-light-of-day jpgs ;-)
