Okay, so I read yet another rave comment from a high profile net photg raving about the iPhone pictures and how they use it more then any other camera for person stuff e.t.c.

Riddle me this: WTF am I missing?? I find the images small, grainy as hell and incredibly limiting compared to an SLR. The ONLY advantage I see is that it's really a pocket camera.

So tell/show me... What am I missing?..... What am I doing wrong? What the hell planet are they on that I don't get?

The iPhone 4 has a 5 mpx camera which, when paired, with some of the options available, like noise reduction can produce some truly awesome images. They will never compare to an image from an SLR. Some of the apps available give you a lot of control over image taking. Not just point and shoot.

If you have great light ...these phone cams will do a great job.

... and if you have a still scene, and if you don't want bokeh, and if you don't need a good high resolution file, and if you can get close to your subject, and if you don't want to be too close, and if you don't want a long exposure, and ...

I think ansel adams would have done great with a camera phone; or charcoal and a shovel; just like jimmy hendrix would wail on your acoustic that is in your living room right now- and tiger woods would beat you with a set of left handed womens clubs.

winners and artists don't brag about equipment- because its not the equipment- sometimes this site likes the stop action, post processed wow factor to the detriment of art...

Well doesn't it come down to the ol saying (what's the best camera?) The one you have with you...

Comparing a phone camera to a dslr is as pointless and useless as comparing a 35mm prime to a 400mm telephoto. They are utterly different, with different purposes, uses, constraints. Work with each properly, knowing what it excels at, what it can and cannot do, and you can do wonderful things with each. One does not replace the other, nor should it.

But just listing all the things that one or the other cannot do, then saying it is stupid or useless, is just missing the point altogether, and kinda silly, too.

Of course, gear alone won't take good pictures, it needs a good photographer. And a good photographer will produce good photos with most gear, by adapting his work and choose a scene that the gear can handle. However, some tools are handier than other to accomplish certain tasks, and in some cases, specific tools are even mandatory. Hendrix and Adams knew that very well, and were pioneers in their respective field. From Wikipedia:

Hendrix: "He often favored raw overdriven amplifiers with high gain and treble and helped develop the previously undesirable technique of guitar amplifier feedback. Hendrix, as well as his friend Eric Clapton, popularized use of the wah-wah pedal in mainstream rock which he often used to deliver an exaggerated pitch in his solos, particularly with high bends, complex guitar playing, and use of legato. As a record producer, Hendrix also broke new ground in using the recording studio as an extension of his musical ideas. He was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic phasing effects for rock recording."

Adams: "Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those to whom he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images."

So yes, you can do great pictures with a camera phone if you're good, but probably not any kind of picture. Or at least, it will be extremely hard.

I bet the cops never harassed anyone for taking a picture of a bridge with their iPhone

No but Apple wants to disable them. Frankly, I wouldn't mind since nowadays going to concerts is like going to an iphone vigil.

Wouldn't that be easy to defeat by just putting a piece of tape over the IR sensor?

BTW, I have NEVER been able to coax a good picture out of my Droid 2. Not all phone cameras are created equal.

Yeah, probably, but rumor also has it that Steve Jobs requested a closed door hearing with a Senate Committee where he reportedly urged them to work with lawmakers to create a bill that outlawed any form of tape, Velcro, opaque material and girl scout cookies. OK, perhaps the girl scout cookies were not brought up.

Okay guys... Pretty much what I was expecting..... some good images IF... IF... and IF NOT..... IF NOT..... and yeah it is not the hardware sometimes depending what your doing.....

Point taken but.... I am real sure even Adams could NOT take close up race car pictures with an iPhone from 1/4 mile :-) Hey, it's just as much as an over generalisation okay.

I am just scratching my head over some of these guys using this mostly for personal work.... So although they have great gear the kids only need iPhone images... Just don't get it.

iPhone 5 is coming out in August - or at least that's what the hype indicates.

I heard it was pushed to September. It's going to make for a very nice birthday gift from my self to myself.
