By the way there is tremendous uniformity in voting now. It's as normally distributed as you could expect with a 1 to 10 scale. Uniformity doesn't mean that there are no outliers. Look at the uniformity of average scores between 2002 and 2010:

Yes, these are final averages not individual votes but the reality is that individual votes are very normally distributed too except for rare instances.

It may not be yours but that does not make it wrong.

I guess then there is where I am confused, I could have sworn we were told not to look at them as a whole, but each one individual. If that is not the case, then you are correct and I will start handing out ones

That's the point. Noone is telling you how to vote. That is just one way that people use. Some will do as you do and try and look at each one on its own. Neither way is wrong, just different.

Here's a look at how uniform the voting in Light on White is. The chart on the left shows the total distribution of all votes. It approximates a normal curve very well with a strong central peak and symmetrical tails just as you should expect. If anything it's minutely skewed to the upper end, i.e. more 8, 9 and 10 votes than 1, 2 and 3 votes.

The chart on the right shows the sum of the 1, 2 & 3 votes and 8, 9 and 10 votes plotted against the finishing positions. As expected even the highest finishing pictures receive some 1, 2 and 3 votes and the lowest get some 8, 9, and 10 votes. The lines are practical inverse of one another as we should expect:

I'd be willing to bet that these results represent what happens on most challenges unless nudity or other "offensive" subjects are introduced.

By the way, I'm not opposed to change and welcome ideas for improvement but when it comes to voting I think some people are trying to correct a problem that doesn't exist.

By the way on the chart on the right notice that there are two points that stand out at image 34 and image 36. These two shots:

I̢۪d say that these two stand out as polarizing shots. They received an abnormal number of low and high votes (statistically speaking). Definitely two camps of voters clearly represented here.

Maybe the results window should show scrubbed vote tallies as well. Would be nice to see how many votes the system or admins scrubbed. Then we can get our spreadsheets out all over again :) The current stats/figures don't show scrubbed votes, in either side aka 10's scrubbed due collusion.
Edit: fixed Typo's

Not the same? The search results for "Vote" from 2002-03 would seem to indicate that things have stayed remarkably the same. One sample thread ...

look at your highest rated photos, all early in the sites history, allmost all have no 1,2 or 3's. And no offence to langdon but there is no way this image would not get a 1 today. so to me.. thats change.

Could it be that technique and equipment has overtaken us as the expense of art? I say yes. People vote for the same types of shot with that "wow" factor- with total disregard to artistic merit. its a joke- we have seen way to many waterfall blurs and liquid drops, etc.

I'm looking for a thread that should be common but having trouble.... It's title is... Why the hell did I get so many 8,9,10 troll votes??

Seems the low end is "troll" but the top end of the tail is never considered a troll... who knew??
