Capture the whimsical, magical, dizzying experience of a carnival or fair.

Since carnivals and fairs are summer events and don't necessarily all happen during the same week, it would be great if this one could be a special month-long challenge.

Yeah except in Australia everyone has them a different week throughout the year as the Showies travel around. So when they only occur once a year it makes it a difficult challenge for the majority of members to enter into. Great idea though...just difficult with timing.

If festivals are included then it may include more people.

Oh sure....NOW somebody suggests it after I shot these a week ago during Memorial Day weekend. :) I haven't even started processing most of ride shots etc. Sigh...LOL.

That's why I said it would work better if it was a special month-long one or had some other special rules that allowed more people to enter : )

Though I guess people could do studio shots with people in costumes if they were really pressed...

A lot of people would have to do studio shots. Where I live all the carnivals are within a one month period over a 600km radius. And only once a year.

That's a short season. Here in New York State they are usually in the 3 summer months June, July and August. Each county has their own County Fair that runs for about a week, and then we have the New York State Fair that normally runs for about 12 to 14 days. That's normally the last week of August and the first week of September.

I live where three counties meet and adjacent counties have their fairs scheduled at different times it's easy to hit all of them throughout the summer if you have the desire and then of course finish off the season with the State Fair.

Is there a reason why they do your carnivals/fairs in only one month?

I live in a different part of Australia to Judi but the situation is much the same here. Our Show (that's what they're called here) is in November. Surrounding towns have theirs within a tight time frame. I think it's because of efficiency. The show people can travel short distances between shows and gradually move out of the area.

There always seems to be a carnival set up somewhere in the city. I'll bet this challenge would occur at the one time when there was not one running.

We just had the Maleny Show and the Nambour show will be in a couple of weeks. But the bigger Ekka (Brisbane show) isn't until August.

I put some images in for the photography section of the Maleny show.
Entered 14 images in various sections - results:

3 x 1st
4 x 2nd
2 x 3rd
2 x HC

YAY

So don't forget to enter your local show if they have a photography section.

What about a Renaissance Festival? Would they fit into this theme?

I dunno. That would probably depend on the voters, but I'd guess that the feeling you'd get from a Ren Fair would be different from the other kinds of fairs. Though I think circuses would give the same feeling as a carnival.

Around here, we have amusement parks with ferris wheels, water rides and more. Along with Street Fairs (a recent one was the How Weird Fair, held of course on Howard Street) and other fairs/festivals celebrating everything from artichokes to azaleas to objects not normally heard about in family forums. And then there are the parades. A recent one was in honor of St. Stupid, the patron saint of April Fool's Day.

Think of a name to embrace all of these kinds of celebrations and that could be a real Challenge.

Oh. heck, just call it

"Parades & Celebrations". Photograph an activity or event commemorating a Community fun day.

Maybe I was wrong to use the word "fair" in my original suggestion. A challenge about fairs would be cool, but it's different from the idea I originally had in mind. I think I should have said "Carnivals/Circuses" and used the same description. It's more vaudville, more of that crazy, dizzying kind of fascination with the strange, unusual, and thrilling.
