I checked in the largest city within 2 hours from me and they have no Digital Rebels or Nikon 70 or Canon D10 in stock. I wanted to try one before buying (at least hold it in my hands) but the salesman said that all of these cameras are sold before they get in the door. I have read the warning about buying from the NY online stores. Are there any really good places to order from?

Many of the NY online stores are disreputable, however B&H Photo, Adorama, and 17th Street Photo are all very well rated. I have dealt with all three, and I would rank them:

1.) B&H
2.) 17th Street
3.) Adorama

I bought my Sony 828 from Best Buy online, very happy with the service.

If you haven't held the camera in your hands and think you might want to return it, I'd make sure you picked a vendor with a good return policy. B&H has a two week return policy. The benefit to buying it from an online site that has actual stores (like Best Buy) is that you can usually return the item to the store if you'd like, rather than having to pay shipping back to the warehouse.

I was lucky and was able to buy locally for the same price I could have got my 10D for online. They had a waiting list for the 10D, I got on the list, because I wanted to touch and feel before laying out the cash. The salesman told me that when it came in, if I decided I did not want it, I did not have to take it, there were plenty of others waiting for one. I did not have to pay anything up front either. They guy just called, told me my camera was in, I went to the store and the rest is history. I would not have bought it online unless I was certain that it was exactly what I wanted.

I agree with B&H and Adorama. You might also consider Sears, OfficeDepot, Gateway and Dell. Most people wouldn't think of these retailers for cameras, but all carry at least one DSLR model and sometimes have discounts of 10% or more (check dealcoupon.com). Three of them also have the benefit of widespread brick & mortar stores for hands-on shopping. Happy spending!

I got my 10D online without really ever really holding one, much less using it... I'm extremly happy, and I've delt with B&H, Adorama and 17th and I've been very happy. I did how ever buy my camera brand new on Ebay to avoid paying taxes on the purchase!

anyone know anything about 42nd street, an online store? They offered me some sweet stuff but I am highly suspect. I wa very close to buying the 300d today but the sales dude kept changing things around & I ended up cancelling my order. :( I think it was ibuy.com

ebay is great but watch for "refurb" which may or may not be okay with you but some of the lowest prices are on the refurb'd models and it's not always entirely clear...
