Ah. This old debate.

In this cornerrrrrrrr ...
DNMC shows only that the viewer has no imagination and is artistically an idiot.

And in this cornerrrrrr ...
DNMC is the realization that challenges other than free studies are assignements, so the topics need to be taken literally.

And over here, shouting into the wind, is Yo_Spiff, doing a darn fine job of finding the common ground. To me, that's:
1) As a voter, try to find the connection, but don't strain something doing it
2) As a photographer, don't refuse to make any connection to the challenge and then be offended or dismissive if someone misses the connection.

A red bottle in a "Blue" challenge is flat-out DNMC, and while it might be an ironic statement, the photographer should know what he or she is doing, and not get all annoyed at "idiot" voters.

I googled it:

DNMC:

DNMC INTERNATIONAL Sdn Bhd is proud to be the Malaysian affiliate of Innovage International Inc., the fastest growing network of wholesale distributors worldwide.

The second highest response was some weird site called D p challenge, or something like that.

There is a facet of the challenges that seems "assignment-like" and it can be a useful exercise to apply some constraints and produce an image that complies, on a deadline. I say "assignment-like" because often the challenge descriptions are sufficiently vague to allow a wide interpretation of what is compliant. And there are frequent threads discussing (and arguing, and ranting) about the interpretations.

There are some among us who produce wildly creative interpretations of the challenge them, often to the delight and surprise of the rest of us. There are some among us who occasionally seem to ignore the challenge theme completely, or seem to defy it.

Some of us notice images that do not seem to meet the challenge theme, spend a bit of time looking for the connection if we have time, and may adjust our vote accordingly. Some of us are less concerned about the theme, more concerned about the image itself, and vote accordingly. Some of us are very concerned that the theme was met, according to our individual interpretations, and vote accordingly. None of us are voting or acting incorrectly.

There are a very few DNMC Police who seem to have both a very narrow interpretation of the theme "requirements" and seem to delight in "enforcement" by tagging images with "DNMC" and scoring lower. That is their prerogative, even if I happen to think they might be missing out on some unique interpretations.

Trying to define what is DNMC for any challenge is just a fruitless and silly as telling people how to vote on images. But that certainly doesn't dissuade many from attempting it :-)

In the end, a DNMC comment is better than no comment at all. If one gets a number of them on an entry, it can be instructive to consider how one may have missed the mark, either in interpreting the challenge theme, or in producing an image that connected with viewers as one intended. If one gets a single DNMC from one of the fairly well known "police", well, one can give it the appropriate weight, or the show of cheeks :-)
