I just wanted to add that you were very unlucky to come last with that score. I have some photos in my portfolio which have scored much less than 4.6391, yet I have never managed to get a brown. I don't think the score is too bad for a photo many people feel was DNMC.

I am a bit envious. I missed the brown ribbon by one place with a photo that is actually pretty good, but a bit of an unusual interpretation of the challenge. It is actually a bit harder to get the brown ribbon than you think! Wear it proudly! :-) (And keep shooting.)

A ribbon by ANY color is still a ribbon.

Just my 2 cents...

As a newcomer to this site and also to photography, i am facing the same hurdles as you are danieletagliabue... and i've put up some photos that got some bad scores. After reflection on them i realized that many things could have been improved, and quite often i didn't get a good shot because i just shot and didn't think enough about the details of the composition or exposure. 99% of the time though the comments were very instructive and helped me think about specifics for the next challenges.

Of course, like others have said, the actual place (or score) in the challenge is often trivial; your photo was just a few tenths of a point behind the mean.

My advice, based on these few weeks i've been around here, is to just keep on plugging along and you'll see definite improvements in your photography. e tieni duro! :)

I'm a new here. I am trying to offer my opinion on your photo but I don't know how to write. So, sorry for copy to show my option below if I were you. (30kb photo)

I think we have all had a take on a challenge that we feel strongly about, then found it to be quite different from most of the others, especially the top 5 scoring photos. So, your choice is to vary your style to try to emulate more "popular" entries, or just continue to shoot what you like and damn the scores.

I like your photo, but compared to the top ten, it just doesn't meet the challenge as literally. On DPC, that often makes a difference.

Just posted this in your Light on White entry

"Probably I did not match exactly the challenge. I know the colors in the front aren't so light. Btw I used very minimal editing. Not like some others fake whites..."

This was a minimal editing challenge. That means all you can do is sharpen and resize - that's it. No cropping or other editing allowed - none. Same rule for all of us. Some of those that have bright whites have used flashes to create white backgrounds (I did for mine).

Putting others down will not help you achieve. YOU need to work on YOUR images. Taking an uninteresting photo is a recipe for disaster. Put thought into what you are going to shoot for a challenge. If you prefer to go the natural route then be prepared to walk around for a long time looking for suitable subjects that will fit the challenge. Take lots of different images that you may have seen and then review them when you get home. Take the time to compose the photo in your camera and also ensure you have good exposure. Take the shot from different angles to see if you can get the best out of the composition.

Keep at it, you'll get there. Some just get there sooner than others.

Not to be getting all karmic here, but since you joined, we had two very high scoring challenges (8.0559 and 7.5352, both averaging around 5.7), and on the other two the averages were 5.4

In over 500 votes, your average score given is lower than 5, and from your 39 comments, 7 were in your own images (replying to comments), and the remaining 32 were copy/paste comments, not one single other comment.

Again, this is a free site, each can participate in their own way, so you can do whatever you like. But don't go expecting help from other members if (as Maria said on the previous post) you keep looking more at other peoples' photos than at your own.

Also, your free to ignore this comment, but usually (and in photography this also applies) you get what you give.

alexlkyThis is an excellent approach at the image. This crop and edit of theimage (the pink lady with pink purse) is seen post shooting and not planned...and that is more than OK. This shot clearly met the challenge while I would argue that the original really did not as there is far too much distraction to see the colors.

Simplicity is often key to get your point across.

Interesting. You seem to appreciate the sugar-coated comments, but not so much the more brutally honest ones.

Truly a sign of a mis-understood artist.

I guess 85 is a number, as good as any.

BTW, I have had lower scores than you, and not so long ago, but didn't whine about it.
As for your photo in the Colour on Colour challenge, maybe it didn't deserve last place, but it lacks an interest point, and it looks more of a snapshot, there was no attention to details (the people's legs were cut for example).

But hey, you do what you like, I do still think that you like good comments instead of honest ones, it's your choice.

now I can read something discussable.... yes, no attention to details is right, but I was not expecting the man there and his movement and when I realized the mistake it was too late. I was also expecting a couple of ladies in pink passing through stairs, but they changed directions, so I entered the challenge with what I got.

try and try again. if you don't get what you want, try the next day. if you realise the mistake, delete it on the spot... it save out card & hdd space. your exposure is awesome, shutter speed is up to your choice 'freeze' or 'motion blur' but COMPOSITION is not there. basic photography... 1st exposure 2nd basic composition. human eyes was train to see thing in rules of 3rd everyday. just observe tv show, advertising, movie...etc, how they frame and place the subject. Ansel spend 11 years at the same place shooting the same thing without getting boring, hope this help, cheers

Well lucky you with the brown I tried many times seriously to get the brown but only managed the once so persistance pays off.
Dont be worried about it as another poster said it was the wrong challenge.
personally I am still amazed at what the voters like I have had many crafted and thought out shots bomb, yet others which have been last moment thow together efforts have done so much better.
Any way you are in a very privilaged group who have won a brown whiterook is another, you will see many familiar names who have either won brown or got close to it if you look back.

I won a brown! But I am not a familiar name :-( Hopefully one day you will know who I am. I need to find my hook though and one that hasn't been taken yet. So that means, no birds, squirrels, waterdrops, self portraits, abstracts, landscapes, sunrise/sunsets, insects...is there anything left for me to claim?

Suggestions off the top of my head: Road Kill, People's Feet, Laundry on a clothesline, rocks, manhole covers, cloud formations, kids with missing teeth, mud sculptures, gourmet desserts, naked mole rats.
