-Fewer dedicated controls, meaning more functions you need to access via the menus
-no tilt n'swivel screen

S95 is about $100 cheaper than the G12, it's significanly smaller and lacks any semblance of a grip. You could save a few extra dollars and go for the S90 instead of the S95, the main difference is that the S95 has better video.

As for the LCD, I usually only glance at it or I'll use my left hand to shade it if I need to...

It would be nice to have an accessory optical finder for the G12...maybe even just a wire rectangle.

There is an aftermarket grip available for the S90/95 made from machined aluminum. I think it is about $20 or so it is $33. It does not take away from the pocketability of the camera, as it only extends as far out as the retracted lens does. Here is another, less expensive one I found, it is silicon rubber and not nearly as elegant in appearance. Probably just as functional, though.

I'd be looking at any of the following:

Canon S95
Canon G12
Panasonic LX5
Samsung EX1

I have the Samsung EX1 after being recommended it by jdannels
It is the fastest of the group f1.8-f2.4 across the 24-70 zoom.

Any of the above would be able to cover your needs.
Of all of them the S95 is the smallest and this is the one I would suggest you go for.
It has the same sensor as the G12 so picture quality will be the same.
It will also be the perfect 'always have with you camera' to pop in your bag when you are not traveling whereas the larger ones are a bit too large for this.
This would allow your purchase to be a bit more useful when not travelling - it will still serve a good purpose and be used and carried often.
Whilst I really like the low light ability of the Samsung, I'm thinking I should have gone with the smaller s95 for the above reason.

I would definitely get the grip that Yo-Spiff has mentioned. Either one would be fine. It would make it much easier to hold.

My 2cents.

Thanks, Maria. I am leaning towards S95 with the aluminium grip (with shipping to Australia the price works out about the same as the silicone one).

Thanks, everyone. You helped me decide to take the following:

Joby Gorillapod with Joby BH1
550D with Canon 15-85mm
Canon 50mm f1.8
filters

Weight saved: ~1.5 kg (difference in tripod weight and leave behind 70-200mm)

I am very tempted to get S95 and the grip and use it the way I used my old AS710 where I can't use 550D. Just need to talk my husband into it ;)

PS He agreed!
PS2 I also discovered that there is a filter holder for S95 (from the same place as the grip) and I could use 37mm filters!!
