Had a coworker come to me asking an opinion on which of these to buy. She can get them both for the same price. Since I'm a Canon owner, I went to DPreview for a detailed overview. Offhand they look somewhat comparable, but different in many things. The single biggest difference appears to be the swivel screen on the D5000, which I consider handy, but a potential weak point. The 5000 has been on the market longer, so has been leapfrogged by the 3100 on some specifications.
This is her first DSLR, so she does not have any special subjects in particular she knows she will be taking photos of and she does not expect to get "serious" with photography.
Opinions? Experiences?
Thanks.

| Went shooting the other night and needed to use bulb. There were a few of us and one person had an entry level Nikon. It did not have the option to hook up a remote shutter release. I think this is a must have for any camera. Person had to stand there holding the button down, same person is now going to sell and upgrade due to that reason. Just check if these models have it. |
