Ok, I sat here on my fingers for a week as I read comment after comment about the lighthouse being too dark. I did appreciate the # of comments I got, but you have NO IDEA how badly I wanted to yell out at the top of my lungs...."BUT IT"S SUPPOSED TO BE!!! THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!!" ;)
If you know lighthouses, and this one in particular, you'd know how fitting it is.....and here is the whole Mag cover layout I envisioned as I picked this photo. After viewing the whole layout, I would love to hear from anyone if knowing any of this would have made a difference in your voting.

I think this would have made a huge difference in everyone's voting.
The meaning that is conveyed through the extra text was not apparent with just the magazine's name.
It's unfortunate, but if it means anything to you, it should have a ribbon beside it in my opinion. |

Thanks Jeremy. I had made one comment in another thread during the week about cover pics having MEANING to the top story in a failed attempt to have people keep that in mind when voting, but with all the debate about replying to comments, I wanted to make sure I kept my ananimity as the rules dictate, so I just sat here cringing ever time I saw another comment.
There were a couple that were diferent. Thank you to those people for the comments & openmindedness. They were bright spots in my week :o)

This is an excellent image.... your cover mockup is rather close to what I imagined when voting. In my opinion yours was one of the strongest entries this week, and I scored it a 9. I'm sorry to see I was not in the majority there.
While my first reaction was that the image was too dark, it was also clear to me that the darkness was intentional; in fact, it had to be. If it was not, you easily could have tried to "save" it with various Photoshop tricks. The placement of the sun also made it clear you were going for a silhouette, with the sun standing in for the beacon light.
Congratulations on a great shot, and I'm sorry it didn't score better. Please also let me know if you intend to make this available as a print.

Thank you for the kind words Terry. I work with The Long Island Lighthouse Society to raise money to rebuild this lighthouse. I was sent out to take photos to show progressive pics of the restoration. The oil house now has all new bricks :o) Just the first steps to what is estimated to be about 10 years of work.
I've been holding off posting the pic to my website until the challenge was over. It will be available from my site. I may even make a tile mural of it for the lighthouse society to raffle off at an event in May. It's one of the things, beside my kids, that is near & dear to my heart.

It seems to be a standard reaction for some to believe that a near-silhouette is 'wrong', which is just an extension of believing that you didn't submit the image you wanted to.

Nancy,
I like your lighthouse photo and what you have done for the cover of the magazine. I think it is perfect for a magazine cover. Your composition was wonderful for the type that would fit on a cover. I don't find the silhouette wrong. It works for your photo and sometimes going against the norm is what pays off. "Think outside the Bowl!" is what I say. I'm getting a couple comments on my orange photo about it being dark where it shouldn't be, but in my oppinion it is what makes the photo unique. |

Oi
I gave it an extemely high mark (9)
Well done, it looks even better with the text.
I've only been a member for a month or so but I've noticed some bizarre marking.

Thank you all for the comments & PM's.
And to the person that thought it was tilted to the left...it's not :o) When you specialize in lighthouse photography, you become finatical about making sure they're straight, even if they didn't start out that way. The architectual angles can be decieveing. You need to concentrate on the lantern room to ensure straightness.

This is why they should allow text to certain challenges. It can completely change someone's photo. |

I'm one of the people who said it looked too dark... I didn't get what you were going for. If you had added "the darkened lighthouse" or something similar in the title, I might have gotten it. I just couldn't tell if you were going for the silhouette effect because there was a little detail in the shadow. I found myself straining to make out detail in the shadow. Perhaps if there was less detail there it would looked more intentional.

I understand the misinterpretations some what. The directions said to make the mag name the title & I never thought to hyphenate it & add a descriptive name.
The slight peek at it's features was totally intentional though, as representation of it's holding on to life by a thread... being a shadow of it's former self. I took it as intended & made absolutely no adjustments to it's coloring or lightness, just slight rotation & sky cloning. I'll tell ya, that sun can reek havok on camera settings. Spent a long time laying in the sand at the edge of the shadow to get it place & exposed just right ;) Need to get a real short table top tripod for those shots...had to do it hand held, but lugging equipment out to some of these sites is a challenge. It was a 45 minute walk out on to a jettie with a backpack that kept unzipping itself & dumping my stuff in the sand...lol But I still do it, so it MUST be love :o)

Yeah, I didn't get that.
But, I'm not really always the deepest thinker...
