Sorry about the DQ but it is still a great shot! Even though it was easy to recognize as yours, I don't think anyone is tired of the shots as it did get the blue! ;)... Keep up the great photos, you'll end up with an incredible series =)

There is nothing wrong with taking pictures or painting what you are good at, what you are comfortable with and what is around you. The thing to remember is, if you dont branch out, try more things, then you will never know if you will every find something else that your amazing at or that you are passionate about.
(I think of the water drops and recall reading how many people after seeing them over and over had to try it, only to find out how hard it truly is, some of those people may have found a new passion as well).
That doesnt mean stop what you love, what your great at, what your passionate about.
I am sure all these people who have 'standard' shots we are used to seeing, also probably have 1000's of pictures that are not standard that we never see, my guess (and its only a guess) is that when they review then for a challenge, to them, the new shots dont meet their own criteria for a great shot to do well in DPC.
This is where you have the branch off, some people want to test the newness, and post it up, otherwise want only their very best to show. Neither is wrong, however the latter will be something that comes up in discussion more because of it.
I am still pretty new here, and so I dont know what DPC means to all of you, for me it was a way to learn new things, to force myself to think in ways I normally dont, hopefully making me a better photographer, to others I am sure they use this to refine their own craft which may mean perfecting that one shot.
Of course there are millions of other reasons, these are just the ones that came to mind.
And even tho we recognize the work, obviously enough people are voting on the image itself, not whether its repetitive or not. As in this last case a blue was reached before the DQ. Someone replied once to a comment I made about this same topic, and said something along the lines of, 'is it better then the last one, did they improve or is it the same'. This is how I think of them now, when I see the same shot, are they still bettering themselves.. |

Ahhh, don't let him get you down. You certainly hadn't reached the level some here have. I mean I've seen enough shots of some kids that I'd recognize them on the street. Same with certain self-portraits. And as much as I love water drops........... |
Ditto...and I like wine...but seriously considering drinking it from a rocks glass these days!! Sorry, chicka! |

I gave JulietNN a 10 for that shot. Now, if I see that same "type" shot again, will I mark it lower because I've seen it before? No.....however, if she keeps going out to the SAME spot and turning in the same composition (except for different angles of water SPRAY) I will start to mark a point lower. I tend to do this on a water drop or wine glass photo. However...I WOULD NEVER MARK DOWN BECAUSE I KNOW WHO IT IS !!!!
In addition, my voting style for these type photos are not set in stone. I actually voted high on a water drop recently. It was DIFFERENT than what we usually see so I did not deduct.
I'd say JulietNN can enter 5 or 10 more similar surf shots and I will score with no deductions as long as I feel it fits in the challenge.
Also, each of her surf shots is so amazingly done, (from the photography end) that I thought she was in a helicopter chasing the surfer. Now I see that she was in the freaking water !!! WOW....is there an 11 on this thing? To get a shot like hers takes much skill and hard work and it will be worthy of extra points until my eyes start to burn from the saltwater.
EDIT: the photo in question may not have been taken while she was in the water but comments still stand.

I hope you are all happy at diminishing what I see as an achievement. |
Let's see. I think I capture a lot of repetitive subjects. So much so, I'm often spotted (with subsequently applied voting bias) for recognized content and style. I have no intention of changing my location, nor shifting subject material because some DPC members have seen my work in the past. My goal is to improve presentations and interpretations of "my world".
Georgia O'Keefe's mountain, New Mexico
Georgia O'Keefe purchased the house where she had been staying at Ghost Ranch in 1940, along with the view of the flat-topped mesa in the Jemez range, called the Pedernal. She said of it:
"It's my private mountain, It belongs to me. God told me if I painted it enough, I could have it."
Sure, she was a painter, but her future husband was photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
There's nothing new under the sun. Don't let anyone at DPC alter your degree of happiness. |
