I'm going to ask this question here because I've read the 300D manual and I can't find an answer there. My question is: Does the 300D use battery powert to keep the shutter open or not? I know for a fact that my Minolta Dimage7i does. I personally think it doesn't since it uses so little power, the battery lasts very long, but I want to know for sure since I'm planning on taking some very long exposures. Once again, thanks in advance.

In the manual it says a fully charged battery will last 2.5 hours on a bulb exposure

2.5 hours on a bulb exposure sounds about right for the 300D and/or 10D. June, if are going to be doing very long exposures, consider breaking them up into several shorter exposures. You can play tricks to reduce random noise this way.
And don't forget about subtracting a dark frame, the fixed pattern noise on the 300D/10D can get noticeable on very long exposures.

You might be interested in a program called Registax used to take a "stack" of astronomical images, and perform tricks to enhance the contrast and detail.
