Ok, let me explain the May Day baskets for those not fortunate enough to grow up with them. You can have your poles and ribbons and do whatever...muahahaha...but May Day...May 1st...the day you prepare for and wait for!

Here is a link to a general description of the tradition. We used to use dixie cups and pipe cleaners or those green plastic baskets grapes used to come in, etc. When delivered to a boy or girl you liked (hopefully in their presence), you were often kissed on the cheek. :P May baskets were given to friends at school, neighbors, etc. and we used to look forward to it. When I still had a job, I used to give them at work and often someone would understand, lol!

Thank you for my basket, Michelle!! I loved it!!! :~)

That's cool Kat - we were all taken out on the playground and danced around the poll with ribbons attached (I know it started at a young age...snort)...not sure what that tradition comes from...but I think it has to do with the Scots and Druids????

Janine, here's a link to the May pole tradition. There is a reason they use a POLE, lol! :P Our Renaissance Faire has one for May. It's quite beautiful!! We didn't have May poles as kids, but that might be a) because the heritage was mostly Scandanavian and German or b) there were so few kids or c) *tongue and cheek* they were hoping that the talk in health class would clear it up and they didn't want to encourage extra curricular behavior and the May pole celebration would be in opposition...or something like that, lol! :P

well, where I grew up there was at the time a strong - Polish, German & Scandinavian population in the area...(not necessarily at my school) so maybe that's why we did it...

We also had a small community, so that was nice. Lots of old traditions still survived at that time (when dinosaurs roamed the earth).

your just a young chick....I didn't have light even...I think it was called the "dark ages"....

I had said Druids meaning Pagan, I've read about this in some of my "smut" novels. Isn't May Day also one of the equinoxes? or solace celebrations where they built huge bonfires and celebrated the spring/earth fertility?

Something like that, lol.

I am going to take a much needed nap in here so I would like everyone to just be silent. ...for at least a couple days. Thank you.
