It still is the master "Photograph's" ability to take gorgeous pictures using only the hardware available, rather than software. I stick with lenses, however, I use Topaz to enhance photos for Challenges, Portrait pro to fix faces...
Also, remember this, it's not only the quality of the photo, but composition of the photo that is important. So, to make things clear for this thread, one thing any software can't do, see things as a photographer would sees it. |

No I say your pictures "blow" my mind ;)
You're not only a photographer, but also an editor. I don't consider myself a good editor, my photos don't pop like yours... It's different style. Most people are spending more time taken photos, and others spend more time editing them (per photo). I see nothing wrong with either style, however personally I prefer to take more and edit less ;) |

I was excited to see a new product from them, but honestly, I wasn't impressed by the feature list. Most of those things can be done easily in PS and Lightroom, except maybe Bokeh.
I did try the bokeh product from another vendor...it was really sophisticated, but I came to the conclusion I wouldn't use it--still seemed fake. And they had real lens emulations in there.
I don't understand their claim of a tilt-shift as well as miniature. Their example for tilt-shift, seems to be the same as miniature, misapplied to a landscape. The reason you use tilt shift in a landscape is to increase, not decrease your DOF, and I doubt the product does that.
I have to also say that the only filter I use "religiously" now is Nik Color Effex. I think tonal contrast in that filter is great, as is the glow and softening function. I like many of the Nik products, but they do seem to add a fair amount of noise and they are mad expensive. Seems to me their the ones Topaz should be emulating. Would love to see lower cost alternatives to Color Effex, Viveza, and HDR Effex. (I have the Nik Lightroom bundle which itself was expensive, and the upgrades are expensive too, so I'm behind on the versions of their products). Topaz product pricing makes upgrading generally easy...though I've been less impressed or compelled to upgrade lately (I said "meh" to upgrading my bundle which didn't include their sharpener).
What do you like most about Topaz filters? Which one?
I'd probably say Denoise is my favorite, but I seem to be getting mixed results with that lately. I've seen it do incredible things though. But I think Neatimage works more "consistently".

I've got to hand it to Topaz, they do one hell of a job of marketing, and they have put themselves in a position where they charge as much for some of their "add-in" products as some companies get for a full-blown application... and to boot, as Neil points out, much of what their software does can be done with basic Ps tools. They are selling one-touch convenience, and doing a good job of it.
Personally, I would never pay what they are asking for any of their stuff. Most of what this latest product does is best done in-camera, and what I would do in post can be accomplished easily with the Ps tool-set. |

| I use mostly detail & denoise. I don't have the bundle because when I started buying their products the only one available was adjust. I think I only paid $30 for it. I'm finding infocus pretty good for sharpening too. Nik is way too overpriced for me. I don't make any money to justify spending that kind of money on software. Denoise is a little inconsistent, but if I can't get what I want out of it I use PSPX2 which also has a pretty decent noise remover. I love that I haven't had to pay for a single upgrade for Topaz. If only all the software products worked that way. The new one looks like it could be fun, but unless it's cheap enough, I probably won't buy it. |
