For all Canon 7D users, there is a new firmware 1.2.5 that addresses a few anomalies. Many might not ever experiance these issues, but it's always a good idea to update just in case. You can read some of the fixes and download using the link below.

Canon 7D Firmware 1.2.5

04/29/2011 09:36:22 PM · #2
As we tend to have a lot of power failures here, I've always been too scared to download new firmware in case I do some damage to my camera. If I download to a memory card via card-reader, can I be sure my camera will be safe when I install the firmware?

As long as your battery is charged and you don't touch buttons while the firmware is loading you should have no problems. I always update firmware via a CF card.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to do it. I think my firmware is still 1.2.2. Do I need to do both or will the latest one cover everything?

The latest version will cover it all. As Matt said, make sure your batteries have a good charge on them, and follow the easy instructions on the site. It's very simple, yet I know it's very intimidating to a lot of people.

Your camera is not attached to your computer or external power that can fail do don't worry about that. You download the firmware, move it over to the root directory of a freshly formatted CF card, the instructions will tell you what buttons to hit and menu selections after you power your camera on with the CF card/firmware in place etc. Then you will have to remove the battery for a few seconds and then replace to let the new firmware register etc. When you power the camera back on you can check your firmware version to make sure it was updated.

A lot less stressful and complicated than most realize. You can do it! :)

Thanks DCNUTTER. I'll come back to these instructions when I've got time to do it.

You're welcome. Once you download the appropriate firmware file you can extract it to a folder. There you will see the firmware file itself and PDF manuals in various languages explaining how to update it. I also always update using the CF card which I recommend.

Just browse the PDF to that section and you will get the proper details and steps to complete the upgrade.

Thanks for the link. Went from 1.2.2 to 1.2.5 (used the EOS utility) and all seems to work fine. Main problem was to find the "SET" button :)

No Problem Henk. Looks like we got our 7D's about 9 days apart based on the date you posted on your profile page. I got mine last month on the 16th. Takes time to get used to a new camera and all the menus etc. doesn't it. LOL.

I must confess that in the end I didn't have the courage to go through with it. Our internet is rather slow and when I had to download an upgrade to ACR last week, I had to download it 3 times before I got a complete download. I'm scared of getting a bad download and then finding that my camera won't work at all, so I think it's safer to stick with version 1.2.2 until I actually find that something isn't working the way it's meant to.

Is there somewhere that I can find out what problems the firmware upgrades are supposed to correct? I've still got version 1.2.2. I'm still trying to work out whether new firmware will help solve the problem I discussed in this thread. JulietNN discovered that our problem is quite common with the 7D, but having read through some of the links there does not seem to be a common solution.

You really should have updated your firmware 5 months ago when this thread was posted. Firmware is the first step in defense of issues like this, and not the last resort.

The thread/link referenced by Juliet is very old. The problem was fairly common 1 or 2 years ago..not long after the camera was released. I've never had that problem, but I update my firmware as they are released.

I DO NOT recommend scanning the firmware fix information and picking and choosing whether to update. A problem you may not have today may arise a year from now when you set your camera to a specific combination of settings that at one time was a firmware issue but now you can't remember that and assume something else is wrong. You could be shooting for a client and lose a lot of money when it could have been avoided. Be pro-active and save yourself a lot of headaches.

If you're intimidated by the firmware update process that I described in detail below back in April then find a friend, camera shop etc. that does it all the time. You're only putting off the inevitable and sucking all the fun out of your 7D when you could be shooting away and smiling. :)

You are three firmware releases behind. That's way too many to not expect some problems that have been worked out over time. Even if you did get a different camera...there is no guarantee that the new on in the box will have up to date firmware in it, and more times than not they don't. That means you'd be back in the same situation in no time.

Agree... It's simple to do. I usually wait a couple of weeks in case there is something (I only recall that once).

One of the later 7D firmware addressed (not fixed :-( ) that crap about the vastly reduced fps when in lower light.... enough for me to notice that it was partly fixed. It's still there unfortunately but it's a start I guess and it helped a lot (not sure which of the firmware it was now).

I went into the shop today and they told me to go to Canon direct. I am hoping my problem is a simple firmware problem, but regardless I will get the firmware updated. As I said in the other thread, I will also take this as an opportunity to get a professional sensor cleaning. I think I need to practice my sensor cleaning skills on the 400D a bit more before I'm ready to touch the sensor of the 7D. Only I'm not sure the 400D sensor will ever come properly clean after a (different) shop sprayed it with canned air, thinking he was saving me the trouble of getting the sensor cleaning kit which I asked for but they didn't have.

hahn23, thanks for the link. Through it I also found the info about version 1.2.3, but they don't have a link for 1.2.4 and I didn't find my problem described in either of the others. However I found the following under firmware version 2.0.8 for the 5D Mark II:
Fixes a phenomenon in which the shutter will not release when pressing the shutter button when the auto power off function is set to "on".
So it does look like my problem is just firmware. Hopefully!
