I'm having trouble figuring out how to promote myself as far as a title goes...especially in SEO and things like that.

If you say "I'm a portrait photographer" it doesn't quite say enough because there are so many styles of portraiture.

If you say, "I'm a lifestyle portrait photographer" then people think that's all you do.

If you say, "I'm an editorial, lifestyle, commercial, and concept portrait photographer" you've listed too many things.

So what do you say you are?

I like to describe myself as a professional burden on society.

I classify myself as a glamour and boudoir photographer. I do some other work, but I don't really promote myself as anything else. Sexy is my bread and butter. Might explain why I've seen most of the brides I've shot mostly naked before the groom has.

I think you should go with "I blow highlights for money."

That's a clever highlight reference. It still feels original after the 500th usage.

500th usage already? Well hell, your marketing campaign is off and running.

Ahhh, it's the little things in life that put a smile on my face :)

Ding ding... Now this is a winner in the tag line contest :-)

I dunno - I would just go with portraits and location and let the web site images show the style. For SEO you want something clients are likely to use and most of the ones you list and we understand would be meaningless to them - they are more likely to do portrait + area or alike IMO.

Go with _______ Photographer in _________ county, city, state, whatever.

When I have searched photographers, I have done my searches using what I want to find and have mostly found their blog entries linking back to their home pages.

I have searched for things like:

Child Photographer PA
Natural Light Child Photographer Montgomery County
Family Photographer Philadelphia
Portrait Photographer Mytown

...and I usually find blog entries with those same titles luring unsuspecting clients to their web. page. and on further inspection of their blog, whatever session they are blogging about has that title, so you could have multiple titles/roles as search options depending on what you are doing that day.

This challenge has nagged a me for some time as well. To further complicate the debate, it seems the local photographers tend to specialize on a market where editorial and commercial photographers try to focus on their signature look or style. I tried to work around the issue by not highlight the portrait aspect of my work and using terms like Individuals, Couples, High School Seniors, Models, etc., but I think it has hurt more than it's helped.

I'd just like to throw in that social networking (mostly Facebook now) for the past 3-4 years has seriously outperformed my website in terms of staying booked.

I can see that. My page is growing fast and I'm getting a ton of exposure. After each shoot I'll become friends with the client on Facebook and tag them in the photos. Then all their friends see the pics and comment on them. And all my Facebook pics are watermarked with my website address so it stays in front of people no matter which picture they view.

Yeah, it works. I use both my profile and a Fan Page to generate business. I'm a little more selective about what I post on my Fan Page, but it's mostly because I try to use my Fan Page to gather clients.

I'm about to turn over my entire Facebook presence to a business manager, because the entire process has become quite time consuming for me.
