I find most of them to be bokeh. Sometimes I think people think bokeh has to be circles of confusion -- but from what I understand, that isn't the case. And the description for this challenge states "Loosely defined, bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground or background elements of a photo. It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background."
So I assumed this challenge was also using the wider definition. |

Have to agree as well, I tried really hard to shoot a true bokeh image, and not just a shallow DOF shot. |

I guess I spun this around a bit and was looking for images where the quality and feel of the bokeh added to the image. Simply having an out of focus background may meet the requirement for the challenge, but having the quality of the bokeh elevate the photo requires something more. |

I did too, but I think people are having a pretty closed mind about it. But that is pretty typical of DPC. I had hoped with it being a member only challenge that would not be the case. Based on comments I think mine is being voted down because people don't think my image is post processed and not taken like that. |

I'm turned right off of photography right now. There's way too much "politics". One has to first guess as to what the meaning of the challenge is for themselves and then, go in and discuss that meaning ad nauseum in a thread for it all. Anything that isn't falling within the agreed upon "accepted range" gets a 1 to 4 score...even though it fits the challenge description. Think I'll use my camera as a planter now. :) |

I am new here and very new to photography but it does not take experience to know that you do and love photography for yourself more than anything else. Your mind and eyes see the potential of a great photo and you try to capture it. Sometimes your imagination gets the best of you but when you do capture that 1 out of 100 pictures that really surprises you. It takes your breath away and I think it is worth that 100 tries just for that 1. DP is a great site to "inspire" you but it should not sum you up as a photographer. I honestly think the three submission I have put in are kind of crap and prob would rate them less than 4 myself but I do it for fun and that is the point. I know I have taken some great photographs, sometimes its just hard to meet the criteria of the challenge. Do not get caught up in the scoring or certain comments. Art is subjective and always will be. Keep at it, do not get discouraged over a few people's opinions.
The whole Bokeh thing is in the definition of the challenge. "Loosely defined" special attention here, always subjective. "bokeh is the quality and "feel" of the out-of-focus foreground or background elements of a photo. It isn't very interesting by itself, but take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background." so if you have a picture of a bird or a flower (which seems to be the trend hehe) and you background is solid green and out of focus... well to me it doesn't tell much to the subject but to someone else it could be the feeling of "nature or lush greens surround the subject" A good photo is a good photo but I did see a few where it seemed all of the photo was in focus and didn't have much bokeh at all. It does bother me a bit when people do not follow theme and try to squeeze in whatever they have. Just 2 cents from a newbie. |

Better to be turned right off of photography CONTESTS..... Keep using your camera, shoot for yourself, and occasionally enter a challenge when you feel like getting a bit of feedback. The DNMC Police aside, most people here are pretty open minded, and not everyone here is cutthroat about getting a virtual ribbon :-) A few are, but most not. Good, useful, thoughtful comments are valued more highly than scores by most people.

I agree...I love a good comment it always makes me feel better about my crappy score. With that said I need some comments to go with my crappy score! |

I did not think it was that bad. I am put off entering challenges for now till I work out what I want to do. I am not a newbie any more but I don't have a clear path either. Somewhat lost at the moment. |

| I was sent a validation request for mine. I'll assume that is a compliment since someone figures I'm cheating and it's only basic edited. Maybe once it is validated people will stop voting low on it assuming it's all photoshop. |

It was me... I am doing same thing for other 167 entries... seems like this is the only way I would get another ribbon :P |
