Besides wasting his time being an astrophysicist Dr. May (unlike the guys in the soda commercials he has an actual PhD) also runs a site devoted to stereo photography, with a recently-published book of restored photos from the 1850s, complete with a collapsable view he designed. Check out his interviews on Fresh Air at NPR.

Interesting! Has anyone here tried stereo photography?

I got his book as a present for someone, and had a chance to try out the viewer. The book includes the (absurdly simple) basic instructions for doing it yourself, as well as details on the technology and techniques used for the antique photos.

I've made a few test shots (mostly macros at this point) which seem to work pretty well -- examples here. I've uploaded them full-size so you can check them out -- they are set up according to the standard specs to work with the viewers, and will print on a regular 4x6 print.

There are thousands of photographers, user groups/clubs, and suppliers out there devoted to this genre ... this place seemed to have good resources. You can probably get a stereo viewer for under $20.

ETA: I just noticed I have MP3 recordings and PDF transcripts of a couple of the Brian May interviews -- if anyone wants them send me a PM with an email address and I will send them along via YouSendIt (about 30MB total).
