Maybe not! But, do the easy and free things first! Eliminate the obvious. Then, we can all share information on how to acquire sharp images, once we know the software isn't scrambling the eggs. |

Richard's point is that regardless of if it is the issue or not, it's something that should be done and it limits the number of possible routes of error. Exercising due diligence just funnels things in a more concerted fashion towards a successful ending. It's like checking your oil when your service engine soon light comes on... |

I understand..but the OP doesn't even have the ability to update the firmware at this point. There are many other easy and free things he can to tonight if he wanted to eliminate the obvious.

What shutter speed was this image taken? Was the camera on a tripod? (I can already pretty much deduce from the angle of the shot that it wasn't) If you can eliminate motion blur..... then you look at the lens/camera for front/back focus. I used to shoot a lot of macro. If you want to really go crazy, try shooting a 180mm macro lens and expect 100 percent crop to look good w/o a tripod and external trigger. Even then I'd shoot two dozen shots of the same subject before I got one at 100 percent that looked great. Of course I was using manual focus. Even the most refined auto-focus on very modern cameras can not perfectly perform in all possible situations. I think you may be exploring those situations. |

You guys are arguing which gun shot wound to patch up first. Both of them are relevant, so let's start patching.
I'll update firmware as soon as I have a card reader.
In the meantime, I'll try some ruler tests.

Re-installed Opanda and the shot looks like 125 shutter. Doesn't look like motion blur. |

Thanks I'll try that tomorrow! |

Well I couldn't wait, so after doing the test linked below and another I found, it seems I have a back focus issue and not a small one either. This of course makes me sad :/ |

So, that being said, what is the best test we (I) can do on my own to verify this. I have two different lenses. Is it Tripod and a measuring tape? If so, what ranges? or should I do a color swatch, or a bullseye? I would love to take the pictures and see if you all think I have an issue or if I am just to hyper for my own good :) |
Good questions! This is the essence of digital photography. One of the first things I do when sorting images is to examine them with a loupe (most RAW processing apps have this) at 100% pixels. The most effective images will have a very sharp RAW image. Those which don't have a sharp image will not be able to be brought up enough to be effective.
In addition to what I've already suggested... tripod mount, fast shutter speed, no motion blur, no camera shake... you should also try the mirror lockup function to avoid shutter slap vibrations. I think we need to trust our cameras and lenses. I always assume OOF is my mistake. And, then I implement steps to eliminate vibrations in future efforts.
eta: The Japanese are a proud and stoic people. They don't always announce fixes to MAJOR problems in the accompanying text to firmware updates. |
The Japs have a photography conspiracy going on! ROFLMAO |

You need to do a controlled test...not just more shots of whatever or whoever is around. |

My test was. I did everything both sheets suggested. So this weekend I'll try to manually adjust the back focus as per a site they both pointed to. See how that works :) |
