I did not expect in spite of 37 entries so far, to get for the second time this warning:

Your entry appears to be significantly smaller in size than what is allowed. Since
smaller-sized entries tend to receive lower votes, we encourage you to upload a
different image that uses the maximum size allowed. You can visit our tutorial
on Using Photoshop to Prepare Photos for DPC Challenges for more information.

I follow same procedure each time, read and reread the tutorial ... is there a trick that I don't know?
I submitted the Sadness picture, small as it is (and that's SAD) but would like to know for the future. Thanks

What are the pixel dimensions of the image you uploaded and the file size? It could be that your quality setting when saving as a jpeg is too low.

What software are you using to resize your image?

Since I'm on Site Council, I can see your image ahead of time, and I can tell you that it's 518px × 550px, which is why you're getting that warning. The maximum size is 800x800, and people do tend to vote smaller-sized photos with lower scores. Whatever program you're using for editing, resize the longest end to 800 to bring it up to the largest allowable size.

My original image is psd 2121x2251, 13.7M
I followed like always, step by step, the tutorial and got a jpg 518x550 to be under 300KB

It's awfully hard to tell what you might be doing wrong without the advantage of being able to watch over your shoulder... but obviously something is wrong if you ended up with the dimensions you submitted...

If you were sizing things down in order to get beneath the 300k limit, that's not the appropriate time in your workflow to worry about file size. Use the "save for web" feature (if using Photoshop) to compress the .jpg appropriately until you reach the desired file size.

If you are using Elements or one of the CS programs, for submissions to DPC you should use "Save for Web". When doing so, you select the size of the image (800 along the longest side) and then adjust the quality of the image so that it is <300kb.

Good luck.

Thank you Alan and Colette. I'll review everything one more time. Had the same problem once and for the life of me I couldn't fix it.
If I get to the 800x800 I go WAY past the allowable size. Wish me luck.
Thanks again.

DID IT! How? Beats me!
I better get at least 5.5 for perseverance.
Thanks to all.

You have the cart before the horse. Get you web save close to 800 pixels on the long leg and then use the quality slider to get the file size down to where you need it. A big lower quality jpg will score better than a small higher quality jpg.

One other thought. I always resize for web to 800 pixels, then look at what percentage that image is. If it is near a simple number (for instance if I'm saving at 26.78%) always save to that number downwards (save at 25%) and submit a slightly smaller image with less blur. You can alway chuck on a frame to get back up to the magic 800 pixels, but if you can keep things sharper for so little real estate, it is worth it.

I always use IMAGE -> IMAGE SIZE to resize the image... THEN do the save-for-web. I think you were probably using the save-for-web feature to resize it, and got caught up in all of the settings in there. I'd just resize it first so you're sure to have the desired size, and then use save-for-web, and adjust the "quality" slider until you're just under 300k.

This time when I finally managed to get it I resized it to 800 than reduced the resolution to 140 (from 180) and when I saved it for the web it was under 300kb. OOOFFFF.
Normally I resize to 640 as in the tutorial. I am still such a novice!
That's why I still participate to as many challenges as I can, rain or shine.

As a coda to this post along with my heartfelt thanks for your speedy help:

In the last day a piece of furniture fell on one of my husband's paintings and ripped it, then my husband sat on a chair that broke under him, I stepped on one of my elaborate drawing trying to help him and lost the little Canon Powershot with which I took the very picture I was having trouble submitting!
I better go to sleep.
