If you do a photo session (portrait, headshots, etc.), do you also provide the prints? Are you expected to do so? The subject came up because I'm doing my sweetie's siblings portrait for their mother' birthday, and he wanted to know where to get it printed, and if I'd be doing that too.
Thanks. |

Depends on the deal with the client. Usually there is a print package. for the head shots, I was giving wallet sizes and 5X7s for a price.
My only print lab is Costco. Their prints are superb for me and for my client. I usually ask luster and auto color fix turned off. |

Hope I don't offend you FocusPoint, but Costco was once upon a time for me- then I found mpix/mpixpro. Will never, ever go back. Also, It does depend on the client and what their wants and needs are. |

If you are shooting & charging on a regular basis, it really makes since to develop a relationship with a professional lab.

You also need to be clear about what you are doing: there is a difference between a personal use portrait session and a commercial headshot for a model or actor. There are different print/layout requirements for zedcards/compcards; check out Spotlight Printing & Imaging for examples.
I'd suggest researching what the full-time pros are doing and then positioning/packaging yourself accordingly. Keep in mind that there are a number of components that make up a commercial headshot price: creative services, shooting, processing, prints, and licensing. Even though it comes down to a number, if you neglect any component, you probably will not be paid for everything that you do. |

It really depends on the clients needs. Many of my boudoir clients like that I offer books of photos, rather than prints, but often buy one or two large prints for the bedroom. A lot of the younger girls just want pics for Facebook, modelmayhem, etc. Sometimes they want a CD of images, sometimes prints. It usually does me well to be flexible in this day and age.

In LA, headshot sessions GENERALLY only require an on-line gallery or CD of the shoot for the client, as their agent/manager/BFF will select and they will take them to the printer of choice. It's the more formal stuff I was wondering about. But yeah, I suppose I should be ready to provide the service, or at least suggestions, to my clients.
Thanks everyone. DPC ROCKS!!!! |
