I know there are a few Do-it-yourselfers here on DPC so I just wanted to show off the latest project. (I also know there are a few people who love to make fun of DIY'ers *cough*yanko*cough*, but I don't mind giving him a laugh). I still need to patch the holes, but I'm having someone else do that (I'm not a good patcher).
Previously the room had two dome lights at each end (you can see the holes), now I have a bank of 18 35-watt halogens on two switches (and dimmers). In a year I would like to switch them to LEDs (don't think the technology and pricepoint is quite there yet, but rapidly moving that way). I also put the three pendulum lights in which was the hardest part because that meant a new switch instead of just tieing into the wiring that was already in the ceiling.
Anyway, I'm proud of the job! :D

Not bad work at all, as everything looks pretty darn good, but a total fail on the before pics man! |

nice work with the lights - but you didn't manage to fix the wires going from the TV to the entertainment unit :p

Jason nice work, but you should have hired a decent photographer to take the pics, lol |

Now you have to post before pictures!
Also anytime you open walls or run wet or hot lines take the opportunity to shoot the exposed lines before you button things back up. If there is ever a short or leak, or you decide to hang a cabinet on that wall, having an image of what you have under the sheetrock will be a big help. |

Congrats on completing that! Wiring in new circuits in existing construction is a royal biatch. Been there, done that... hated it!
Sure adds to the enjoyment of the final product when you did it yourself! |

Looks great!
I remember some of your other DIY projects like the backyard fire pit. I've been biding my time waiting until I get a little bit more done to the waterfall, pond, and landscaping that I'm doing in our backyard before I post pics. I think you might be surprised at what I've pulled off. |

Oooh, the suspense! This wiring project has me not wanting to do another for a while, but I think the next thing will be to build an 8x12 tool shed on the side of the house. There's no wiring in that! :) |

This is uncanny! My neighbor's fourteen year old daughter did essentially the same to their home.
EXCEPT she added 24 20 watt halogen/neon bulbs that change colors according to her mood, with four switches and dimmers with sequential strobes. She used four pendulum lights, each with their own switch hidden under the cabinet. They were also hung about 3/4 inch lower than yours which really makes them more attractive than yours. She is patching the four holes left by the original fixtures, two of which are finished and if you didn't know, you would never know they were there. She had to stop and make a quick run to the hospital to deliver a baby. cough cough
Actually, your's does look good doc. |

I forgot to mention a neat little trick which was to use the larygoscope from work to peer into the ceiling and walls before a big hole needed to be made. The worst part about jobs like this is you want to know what's behind the wall before making a hole...but you can't know until you make a hole. |

And I'm sure all the wiring is up to code and was done by a qualified electrician for your insurance policy to remain in effect in the event of fire right? |

Very nicely done. I am an electrician and I wired homes for eight years (I work in the utility industry now) and I will say that from the pictures the lighting is very well done. Recessed lighting, we electricians call them "cans", give everything such a streamlined and great look. I also like your color choices, you have a beautiful home.

You are such a snark. ;)
EDIT: (I'm assuming permits are sufficient for this purpose.)

you don't have to use a licensed electrician, you just need to follow code, and getting the permits backs up that you did. |

Must be nice to live where you are. Here you need a permit to begin the work, have to have the work inspected and reported to the Hydro Commission by a licenced electrician... anything other than that would result in a hefty fine and worse, would negate your insurance coverage in the event of an electrical fire.
Wanna hear really stupid...I got home today to find my garbage still sitting at the end of the driveway. There was a note on it that said " By Law, we could not pick up this bag because the bag tag was not in the proper place...(The top of the bag).
Excuse me for putting the tag on the handle of the garbage can...like I have been doing for years. What has the world come to that we have to apply laws regardinly the placement of stickers on garbage cans.
Sheesh

Not in the least... where I live we still celebrate "Orangemen's Day" which commemorates the Battle of the Boyne, that took place in 1690 outside Drogheda, now in the Republic of Ireland. Not too many French people celebrate that.
Socialist... when I look at the taxes I pay every year... ya probably, but I don't have to worry about having to sell my house if I need an operation. :O)

Ray, if you ever do want to sell your house give the neighbor girl a shot at selling it. She dabbles in real estate a bit too. |
