Can I get some personal opinions from people how have owned a Canon 40D? How much of a step up is it from a 350D? Does the 40D have any known problems? Ive been hearing about some 'Error 99' issue, but im not sure what thats all about. Would you recommend it?

Had a 40d. Loved it. I didn't have any problems but upgraded after 13,000 actuations.
You will love the big screen on the back and the increased shutter speed.

Don't get me wrong... I love my camera, but the amount of time and money it took to fix that Error 99 makes me think you might want to perhaps get something a little newer... perhaps a 60D of 7D?

how common is that problem? And what is the cause?

It's seems to be the most common cause of 40D death. Error 99 is a generic, non descript error. In my case, I needed a new shutter assembly. Close to 40000 activations.

I love my camera, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it, on the proviso that they're aware of the Error 99 issue.

I upgraded from the 350D to a 50D (with a brief intermediate step of a 20D), and the difference was huge. I would think that would be a fairly close upgrade to what you are considering, except for the resolution. Aside from a cleaner and higher resolution image, the biggest difference for me was the additional switches and dials. They made it convenient to use some features that I had rarely used before, due to now having direct access to those features.

its seems a 60D can do all the 40D can with better resolution and ISO. The prices seem comparable.

I like my 40D, and have not had any problems. At the same time, there are a couple of newer generations out there. Personally, I would opt for a 50D or later. Reason being is that you can do micro focus adjustment for your lenses, if needed. The 40D has to be sent with the lens to Canon. So, if you are wanting that last little bit of sharpness, plus the other goodies, I would go with a newer model.

I can't really justify upgrading this one. And I am happy. But, if you are making the investment there could be better bang for the buck.

Just as a point of fact, the 50D is the only xxD with microadjustment. They removed it from the 60D and it wasn't present on the 40D.

I loved my 40D, even after I drenched it in water, it still worked albeit it developed a personality after that.

But, I will say, I have been very happy with my switch to Nikon.

Love my 40D, haven't had any problems with it at all in 3 years. The one error I did have with it was...yep, operator error, lol.

I had an Error 99 on my 40D, but it turned out to be a problem with the lens -- something to do with the contacts.

There was a thread on Error 99 a couple of years ago. As I recall, Error 99 isn't just one error. It's sort of a catch-all for a lot of things that don't come under the other error "categories".

As to cameras, I upgraded to a 7D, but I kept the 40D as back-up, or carry it along with a different lens, so I don't have to keep changing lenses. Right now it's got the Lensbaby on it.

If I were to buy a new digital camera, I'd buy the newest one I could in my price range.
