Can't say I've heard of the 20-200.. I was under the impression that teleconverters only work with L-range lenses, which I'm guessing the 20-200 is not?
If you mean the 70-200/4L, then the 2x TC would work, but would take the aperture out of the focus range for the 300D (<= F/5.6).
I was considering the 100-400L myself, although the lower aperture of F/4.5 seems a little high for the UK, where it's pretty dull most of the time. crabappl3 also suggested the Sigma 80-400 to me, which may very well be cheaper. No doubt others will mention the Sigma 'Bigma' 50-500, which I think has a number of disadvantages..

I just got the 100-400 IS USM and have only taken a few test shots in my front yard. Good so far. I was always renting the 400L prime and I loved that lens, but bought the 100-400L for a few reasons
I'll be using a lot for sports, where I want the range
It gives me versatility when shooting nature/wildlife
It takes a converter (the 400mm prime does not)
It has IS where the 400mm prime does not
And the list goes on, but those are the main reasons. |

Either the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS w/EF 2x TC or the 100-400mm IS lens can get you reasonable results at 400mm but in my experience the 100-400 does a significantly better job. Some people say that the TC combo is just as good but I personally have not seen it and I have personally tried both setups. The 70-200/TC combo might be better for you if you mainly use the 70-200mm range and need a fast (f/2.8) lens. If you are mostly shooting at 400mm then as far as I am concerned the 100-400 is the clear choice between the two.

Tfaust,
Was it the 400mm f/5.6L that you were renting? If so that lens will indeed take a teleconverter. It will not autofocus on a non-1 series body (300d, 10Dâ€Â¦) but it will if you tape over some of the contacts. It will AF with the 1.4x TC when used a 1-series body (1D, 1Dsâ€Â¦). Certainly the 100-400 is more versatile due to the zoom and IS but the 400mm f/5.6L is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used and I have found actually does better with teleconverters than the 100-400 IS does. Either way, they are both very fine lenses.

Greg, it was the 400mm f/5.6L that I was renting. The cam shop told me it wouldn't take a TC, so I do apologize for posting bad info. Thanks for the tidbit though. So much still to learn about lenses, but I'm getting there.
Since I was spending the money anyway, and a large part of what I'll be doing with this lens is motocross and wildlife I figured the versatility between 100-400 would be best. Plus, when shooting motocross, I don't use a tripod so the IS was very appealing to me as well.
You are right though, that 400mm f/5.6L is an awesome lens and very sharp. |

The Canon 2x will not work with all L lenses. It will work with the 400mm f/5.6L though. It might be posible to make other lenses work useing extention tubes. the 70-200s will work, and the 100-400L are the only zooms that will work.

I personally have both the 70-200L IS and the 100-400L IS as well as a 1.4x; both lens are fantasic performers.
A converter will "always" degrade things to a degree, it is just matter of what is acceptable to the user.
Trying to replace a, or instead of a 100-400 using a 70-200 really only works if it's a configuration that you seldom get in too. They both have their specific place in the scheme of things, naturally.
The only time I really ever use the 1.4x is only on the 100-400 to get that reach that there really is no other choice at the time.
The 70-200 is an absolutely fantastic glass and I use the hell out of it 6:1 or more over the 100-400, and if I could only get one, thats the one. On the other hand, it is hard to do the job of the 70-200 on the lower end of things with the 100-400, especially on anything other than a full frame 1Ds.
So break down and buy em both, you'll never regret it... |

Heh heh, you'd have to pry my dead fingers from around it, LOL. Seriously, since good used ones go for nearly the price of new, you're better off just biting the bullet and buying new... warranty is a good thing =)
