Yeap, they send you a "funny" check that you have to deposit to your account and then go to Western Union to send that money, usually the amount is around $2,500.00, then of course your bank comes back telling you that the check doesn't have any funds. Usually this people will pressure you, to send the money righ away, since they know you will find out from your bank what's going on. It happened to me, but I knew right away there was something fishy about it. |

I get these all the time, but I've never actually opened one to see what they had to say since I figured it was a scam all along ... |

Oh, it's DEFINITELY a scam, it's just a new one on me. Further research since I posted shows it's been around since at least 2009... I enjoy seeing what new twists people come up with...

I think you'd be perfect for it Robert. I think you should go for it! One less person who will have the time to submit a photo that will undoubtedly bury mine.

FWIW, mystery shoppers are real, but it's actually to evaluate worker's performance, AFAIK. |

I actually DID get paid a couple times to be an undercover diner, which is sort of the same thing. It wasn't a living or anything, but a free meal and some spare change :-)

I actually was a Mystery Shopper...however, it was for dining. I was given an assignment which was the restaurant my wife and I would have to dine. There was also about a two week window if I recall. They gave me a check list of what they wanted you to rate. You would go to the restaurant and dine as usual.
I had to pay out of my pocket for my wife and I. Afterwards, we would fill out the paperwork at home. We would send in the results along with all receipts. I'd say the paperwork took about an hour to fill out if you really did it correctly.
About a week later I received a check back for the full amount of the receipts and $75.00 for the "work".
Sometimes the meal was over $200 and other times it was $25. It depends on your assignment. We did it about twice a month for about a year and it was worth it.
If you filled out the paperwork promptly and according to instructions, you were given more assignments.
So in short...this company picked up the bill twice a month for my wife and I to eat and paid me $150 on top of that. We stopped doing it after our first child was born.
I think the company was "Green and ...something"...but I don't remember the something!
KS
Edit: My wife just told me it was $50... not $75....I'm getting old.

Well I can't hide it any more. I have been a mystery DPCer for over 6 years. Langdon has been paying me to pretend to be an inconspicuous member and report back to him on who the troublemakers are, who the corrupt SC members are, and to quell any uprisings or demands for changes to the site.
Now pretend I never said anything. |

I've also been a mystery shopper, mostly for retail outlets of various sorts...were the staff at such and such a hardware store actually knowledgeable about a new line of paint they were selling, were the washrooms clean (often not - YUCK). And you had to time everything, necessitating the need for a watch (this was some years ago) with a digital display and second readout. For example how long was it til the staff picked up the phone, how long did you spend in a store before an associate appoached you, etc.
And after getting the paperwork in I'd get a cheque for the whopping sum of $30 CDN, even though I often had to spend well more than $30 in expenses to get to some store locations. So I quit mystery shopping as it simply wasn't worth it. Never got any cushy jobs like doing restaurants or hotels :-/ |

Aren't you glad they never asked you to call a government department then... You would still be waiting at the end of the line :O)

OK, I had to call the California Franchise Tax Board (income tax) today. They now have a system where, instead of waiting on hold, you can leave your number and they will call back within a specified time period. Today's estimate was 17-25 minutes -- I got a call back from an agent in about 20 minutes. |

There are quite legitimate outfits though. I signed up for one a couple years ago, but never actually did any shops because I got a normal job shortly after. Usually they pay a set amount to cover the cost of what they want you to purchase and you get to keep your purchase. |

...and I fully believe that. I noticed the magic word "Tax" relating to where you called. The tax people here love me so much... they call me. :O)
