William Worthy isn't worthy to enter our door
Went down to Cuba -- he's not American anymore

I believe they can do that in Canada too.

I think the key takeaway is that if you're a registered sex offender, there's a good chance you'll be suspected of smuggling illegal kiddie porn on your laptop.

granted i understand why this guy got single out, I'm not trying to make an excuse for the guy, but at what point do we even bother to adhere to our rights?

I don't care that the guy was a sex offender and I am appalled at what they found on his computer. But i am not for illegal search and seizure.

National security et al. isn't a legitimate reason to throw away our constitution and amendments. The reason we have these rights is to limit the control of government over its people, yet we continue to give up more and more rights and give our government more and more control.

I realize that this provides less cover for crimes, but at what cost is it worth it?

whats worse it is these courts with their appointed, not elected, judges, that are giving away our rights.

How is searching through this guy's laptop any different than looking through his luggage? Granted it took time, but if you had luggage that was locked in a way that they couldn't open it at the border, should they just give it a pass too?

IMO, It is substantively different. If you are trying to move data unlawfully, you don't put it on a laptop and haul it through airport security and Customs. So why would they be searching laptop drives in Customs? The only excuse for doing this is to circumvent the laws that are normally in place to protect against unlawful search.
While it is very important that we catch criminals, and I don't debate that this guy was one of the worst kind, we can't do so by abandoning our rights.
I suspect that this case will be appealed again, may even go all the way to the Supreme Court. It really sucks that if the courts do what's right for our freedoms, this low-life will go free.

Obviously, this guy was moving his data that way. Which leads me to ask, why wouldn't you move data that way? In many ways, it's the ideal way to do it, leaves no trail on the internet, no clues as to its source.

If it's somehow made illegal to search data coming into the country, you've created a perfectly undetectable means to move such data.

It's no different to me than if he'd been smuggling in a bunch of kiddy porn mags in his suitcase.
