I recently bought an LX-5 and I love it!

Some shots here > Lumix DMC-LX5

Just for consideration, the Canon S95 is in the same class and price range as the Lumix LX5. The zoom range is slightly different (more tele, less wide) and image quality may be marginally better. Check 'em out with IR's Comparometer.

Ditto for the Olympus XZ-1

28mm F1.8 on the wide angle end.

It's getting some good press, and the view finder for the PEN series works on this camera as well. Nice option when shooting outdoors on bright days or critical focus is required.

At the time I got my LX3, I checked out an S90 in person as well. While it's form factor was nice in that it was mega pocketable, that also made it hard for me to use. I have large hands and both the S90 and the S95 are completely smooth, very small, and lack any indentations to help you hold them. The popup flash was also motorized and seemed to always be under my fingers popping up and further compromising my grip. I came to the conclusion that if I bought one, I'd have to get an aftermarket grip like one of these. I didn't really want to worry about dropping the camera, particularly because I was planning on using it a lot on my outdoors excursions, and dropping it may mean that it spent the final bits of its life plummeting 500+ feet.

Since this is for your wife, it may be a moot point, but as much as I liked the portability and even though I'm pretty careful with gear, it seemed more like when than if for me.

Good comparison article here

The Olympus XZ-1 is certainly of interest, but for me, and for any digital enthusiast I would think, the fact that the battery can only be recharged in camera is RIDICULOUS. Instead of buying a second battery you can buy a whole second camera! Possibly Oly will rethink and start supplying separate chargers?

The comparison article was very good.

Well there you go... pretty much a Lumix LX5 smackdown on the others!

Looking for a little update here. I'm ready to buy a LX5, but I noted that they are out of stock at NewEgg and OneCall doesn't carry them. B&H has them for $400. Is the line about to be updated or is there some news I'm unaware of?

Probably continuing supply constraints as a result of the Japan earthquake. Panasonic has a factory in Fukushima, and their product cycles tend to be on the long side.

If you haven't purchased yet you may want to look at the Samsung EX1 / tl500. I was looking a while back and jdannels suggested it. Did the research and purchased one. Very happy with it.

Lens - 24-70mm with f1.8 to f2.4
Similar size to the LX5
Flip Amoled Screen

Might be worth a look.

Cheers

Thanks! But I've pulled the trigger and the LX5 is coming from B&H some time next week. It's mainly for Jenn, but I've heard that it's a pretty sweet little walkaround so who knows, I may use it too.

Think you will like the LX5 - I took it on holiday recently and loved it. > LX5 - Turunc, Turkey

That's what I thought when we bought David's LX3, but it's practically impossible to get it away from Penny :-)
