Museums contain great collections that inspire us but the best museums also inspire us in and of themselves. The Musee d'Orsay in Paris, for example, or New York MOMA. Take a photo which show cases the museum itself rather than its contents.

Good idea!

I like the idea! Are you thinking images would focus on the venue and/or architecture?

Venue, architecture, interior spaces, exterior setting ... The building more so than the content. The Tate Modern in London is another great example.

Maybe title your photo with the name of the museum.

Could be an interesting one. Some really nice architecture and lightplay in some of the museums near me.

Why not just plain old Architecture VII??

Because museum architecture is a very special field, and it has generated some fascinating design. I will admit, though, that the field of potentially winning locations at which to shoot is relatively limited :-)

Agreed. This challenge would be more suited to those that live in larger cities with well funded museums. You can however find local museums almost everywhere, and it would take some creativity to do an interesting shot of one in an ordinary building. But it can be done.

In the abstract, that's certainly true, or it would be if the challenge were about what's IN the museums... But since this putative challenge seems to be specifically designed to showcase the architecture, not many people are gonna be able to compete with things like the Frank Gehry designed museum in Bilbao or the Richard Meier designed Getty in Santa Monica, or for that matter Frank Lloyd Wright's Guggenheim in NYC. You have a couple great museums in your neck of the woods, though.

I don't know how well one of our rustic, Cape Cod museums would fare in this. If I thought photographing the collections was the challenge, I'd have some fun at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford :-)

Personally, I'd be more interested in obscure or oddball museums* as subjects -- you can see pictures of the famous museums anywhere ...

*Whaling is good ... how about the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda -- perhaps a contrast between the outside and inside ...

My notion was to showcase the museum vs. its collection.

Even a humble museum can have inspired spaces to host the collection. Even a humble museum can occupy an extraordinary space in its environment. For example, I grew up in Billings, Montana, USA. where there is a museum which is smaller than my house that sits atop a sandstone bluff overlooking the Yellowstone River Valley. The Red Lodge Mountain ski area 75 miles away is clearly visible with each snow filled run discernible. Historic Buffalo Jumps are clearly visible. This is less than 50 miles from the historic Custer Battle Field. The point is that this modest museum is an extraordinary space.

So photograph it for Pete's sake. Or any other museum, grand or modest, where the space is interesting in and of itself.

I already have in my portfolio this very formal picture of the MMA in NYC that in my view suits it very well.
Have tens of photos on the subject of museums and look forward to see pictures that are not just good postcards.

Do people actually like it? Is it not the falcon not hearing the falconer?

It's a masterpiece of architectural expression. A fine example of the architect proving he's every bit as much an artist as the makers of the work the building showcases. (Uttered with a straight face...)

I used to live around the corner from the ROM. Possibly I dropped a crystal and it grew.

Maybe it's a mindset brought on by current events, but my first thought was 'Earthquake'.
