Japan has been preparing for the big one for ages and it's obvious some of their prep has worked otherwise the devastation would have been a million times worse but the amount the country has endured is still horrific. It's so painful to see all those little houses clustering up and getting swept away. That's somebody's life being broken into tiny bits. |

Thoughts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. My friend is working in Tokyo at the moment but thankfully he's managed to text to say he's ok and the area around him isn't badly affected but some of the photo's and video footage emerging show just how terrifying it must have been. |

You can donate money at redcross.org and there is even a way to text REDCROSS to 90999 and 10.00 will go to them, charged to your cell phone. |

It is just unimaginable the amount of devastation that has occured in Japan. It's a good thing the Japanese are super efficient in the way they operate in a day to day life or else things would have been much worse I'm sure. I hope another one doesn't occur again, like in Christchurch, NZ.

I was watching footage of that amazing wall of water spreading over the flat lands and sweeping away cars, houses, etc. I didn't see many moving vehicles or pedestrians in that footage, however. Does anyone know how much warning time people in those areas had to evacuate? Did they have any time? I've heard generally the populace is well-prepared and even practice evacuation drills.

Nissan and Toyota have shut down. Not sure for how long. CNN.com and MSNBC.com have some terrific images.
Good news is my son's friend lives up West in the mountains and didn't even feel the quake. |

This is very scary. It sounds like Godzilla will reawaken to attack Tokyo. |

That is a disgracefully irresponsible and ignorant headline, and clearly deliberately so given the comparatively mild content of the actual story. In the same vein I have just seen a TV report showing a wave of mud and water flowing through a Japanese town while the news anchorgirl voice over breathlessly said it swept across the countryside at 800km per hour. In the film some cars were visible outrunning the wave; cars apparently traveling faster than 800km per hour. |

A somewhat understandable misconception. This morning my grandmother said she heard on TV that water from the tsunami was moving at over 600mph. I told her to imagine a humpback whale moving at close to Mach 1 and tell me if that makes sense. The wave, yes, but not the water. Many people don't get the difference. |

It seems that a photographer has been washed out to sea while standing too close to waves, while trying to take photos on the Californian coast that was affected by the tsunami. I hope it wasn't a DPC member..but everyone needs to take caution at moments like this.
It may well be that the person may not be a professional photographer, but still... |

Thanks Simmo, all Hanae's family are OK, shaken but in good health. My daughter Yoko is also fine and she has inflated her swimming ring in case there is another Tsunami she said... bless her. |

:-( I hope not too many nightmares for the little ones. Tough situation shelled out by nature in Japan. |

The wave made it to California this morning and destroyed or sunk 36 boats in the Santa Cruz Harbor. That is a big surge. Had the quake been anywhere but Japan, which has the toughest seismic code restrictions for building, the damage would have been exponentially bigger. |

Super moon, it was predicted to happen.
Some other super moons, 1955, 1974, 1992, 2005 each of these years had extreme weather, this year its and extreme super moon.

The article states:
Nikon reports that there have been no reports of injuries among its employees in that city, and the plant seems to have escaped serious damage as well.
