I'm delighted to say I've finally joined the ranks of CS5 users. So far, so good: but I'm sure there's a lot I don't know. Any tips, hints, or caveats?

| Make sure to spend some time with content aware fill and refine edge. Two awesome improvements (at least over the CS2 I had previously). |

| Stick with layer adjustments since they are non destructive. Get topaz. |

Content Aware Fill is freaking awesome!
Easily took a Beauty Dish out from in front of a tree in a recent shoot.
It works wonders with power lines.

CS3, upgrade time. CS3 doesn't have an upgrade for the RAW files from the 7D, was a big issue.

That BETTER be tongue in cheek, LOL.
BTW, all my Topaz and Nik moved right over when I copied them from the 3 directory to the 5 directory.

Ditto the comment on Content Aware Fill. I wasn't a big fan to start with, but as I've refined my skill in using it, I've decided it really is an amazingly helpful tool. Albeit at times a little fiddly. It's particularly good when using the spot healing brush.

I thought Spot Healing was the ONLY way it can be used?

ETA: Oh I see, content-aware "healing" vs content-aware "fill", different things...

How do you get "healing" content-aware? I've only used "fill". |

Works with Spot Healing Brush...
Click the content aware button at the top of the screen.

im using cs5, but the features that i use very often are still those from the early versions that i used in my previous workplaces, except of course for camera raw and some cool topaz plugins.
most of the cs5 items listed in this link from adobe are still foreign to me

Cntrl-shift-V is nice for paste-in-place: you can cut objects from an image and paste them on a new layer in the exact same position. Content-aware Scaling looks like a fascinating feature, though I assume it's verboten in DPC?

Here's something peculiar:
When I open CS5 directly, it shows my Topaz, my Nik, my OnOne plugins, as expected, and I can use them. BUT...
When I launch CS5 out of Bridge, by choosing an image and double-clicking on it, those plugins are not present; there's no indication they have been installed.
If CS5 is already running when I open Bridge, then Bridge will open the chosen images in that iteration of CS5 and I have my plugins. So it's an easy workaround (first open CS5, THEN open Bridge) but it seems odd.
Any thoughts?

| Not my cup of tea, but CS5 is on sale. Probably old news, but I wanted to make sure people knew of the sale price. |

Can't help with your problem, I'm not technically minded, but can confirm that I do not have the same issue when I open directly from bridge. |

Thank you. I've got less than a week left on my trial and was dreading having to pay for it.
One stupid question - I accidentally installed CS5 Extended. Do I have to download the whole thing again or is there a way to change it? On our slow Internet, downloading the program took about 8 hours. |

I think that the trial version is Extended by default, and I'm not sure there is a way to change that. There is no reason you should have to download again, or even to uninstall and reinstall. You should be able to enter your license code and you should be all set. If you don't buy Extended, you just won't have access to those features.
We installed CS5 on my son's laptop last August, and he used the trial until he was eligible to purchase an academic license. When we purchased the license, all we did was enter the license code, and he was set. |

Thanks, kirbic.
Another stupid question - the special is an upgrade from Elements. My computer came with Elements 7 ready installed on the computer and no packaging. How do I find the serial code? |

Photoshop Elements >>> About Photoshop Elements
Should be there in the popup box somewhere.

You know what? There is not a match between the number in the About PSE box and my registered number. https://www.adobe.com/ If you've registered with Adobe, you should be able to sign in to your account and see the registration number. If you didn't register, then you may need to contact them. Sorry for any confusion about this. |

Was just going to post this... ran into the same thing myself some time ago. There are also some freeware apps that can report the license codes of installed software, if you can't log into your Adobe account.
ETA: Google "find software product keys"

| I don't think this offer is going to work for me. When I try to sign in it tells me my ID is already in use in another country. When I try to create a new account it won't accept my email address because it is in use elsewhere. From the South African site it is trying to charge me $729. I feel like I'm being ripped off. |
