| I am trying to take a low-light picture doesn't have to be low-light, but it has a neater effect) and capture motion trails. Though I have gotten some decent pictures, I still have a lot of noise in the background. Is there something I can adjust to get rid of it? I do not have PS, or a program comparable, so post-editing isn't entirely possible. My camera only has an ISO of 100, but I can manually adjust the shutter speed OR the aperture (not both). |

| The noise comes from an extremely long shutter speed. Try to introduce more light gradually until you have the right balance. |

Noise is generated usually by long exposure times causing pixels to over expose. I have found that this is one of digitals strong/weak points. The sensitivity that digital has to light works to bring out detail in shadows that film would miss but really can cause a lot of noise in low light photography.
Try to balance available light so that you get enough to lower your exposure rates but get the mood. And be careful of extreme lighting variations. Get a nice even lighting. Maybe get your subject lit well enough for a good exposure on that while allowing the surrounding area to be slightly under exposed
If your camera has over and under exposure features (+/-) try those as well.

I know that in astronomy, CCD cameras are 'flat fielded' before they take any images with them. To do this they expose it to as close as they can get to a uniform light source, or at least one with well understood variations (I was involved in a project that tried using images of the sky at dusk or dawn when I was at Uni). The data from that is then used to correct the images they take later, because each sensor in the camera has a slightly different sensitivity to light. If the noise here is created for the same reason, maybe you could take a long exposure of an evenly lit, grey sheet of paper or something and use that in photoshop to remove the noise?

karmat there are many noise reduction photoshop actions you can download on the net. do a google search for something like 'digital image noise reduction photoshop action'

I think he may have said he didn't have Photoshop.
I would love to use those actions but ...
1) My Photoshop LE doesn't have actions on it
2) Do any of those actions include non-allowable edits in them?

hmm. as the cheese said, 'gouda point'.
i think there's a software called 'neat image' that does good NR. you can download a trial size too, i think.
