I'm sure this sounds straight forward, but it's one of those things I can stuck on and cannot move forward.
I want/need to readjust the portfolio galleries on my web site to better reflect the markets I am going after. I need to hit the local market, because I need to generate the revenue, while still leaving myself open to the editorial and commercial markets that I would love to break into.
My local work consists of:
Senior Portraits - 50% of my business
Glamour Portraits - 20% of my business, but I'm not a big fan of the name. This is mostly adult women looking for some slightly sexy images as a gift for their husband, a bit of a confidence boost or some memories before gravity and kids take their toll.
Family Portraits - 10% of my business, but not something I like to focus on.
Weddings - 10% of my business
Model Portfolios = 10% of my business
So here are my sticking points:
1. I want to do more creative portraits that are not tied to High School Seniors. I think there could be a market and I may have some examples to show, but I cannot think of a name for this category of portraits.. character portraits and lifestyle portraits come to mind, but not much zing in those words. I could just say portraits, but that seems to general.
2. I would like to expand on the Glamour Portraits, but they don't even show in my portfolio because the I don't like the word so much.
Does anybody have thoughts on a better approach to break on portfolio galleries?
Here's the current portfolio, almost a year out of date while I try to decide how to reorganize.
Thanks! |

Sorry I haven't come up with the category names you are looking for, but I have one observation about the current website. The three images on the front page all have the subjects facing the same way, with their heads tilted almost at the same angle. I think it would be helpful to show more variation on the home page. You have some good variety inside the three categories to choose from. |

Thank You! I don't think I had even taken the time to specify the cover photos, which is a major slip on my part. |

It's a real challenge to coin unique names after the cliches dictate usage.
Whatever synonyms for, say, for "glamour" you'd be tempted to consider (say, "style"), you'd want to go from the more general to the specific, not the other way around. You want to "charge", not dilute, as is so popular.

I think the hardest part of this for me is that I don't think of categories or market segments as I'm working with a client. I'm listening to what they are telling me, adding a bit of my own interpretation and then working to capture the idea that we came up with. Trying to disassemble the resulting image into categories is difficult. I would like to avoid categories completely if possible, but then how do I reach potential clients and let them know what I can do for them. Some of my best work isn't even on my web site because I cannot figure out where it belongs.
I know this isn't the most exciting of topics, but I do really appreciate the feedback. |
