Please keep the people of Christchurch in your prayers. The earthquake that hit a couple of hours ago was weaker than last September but more shallow so therefore more damage.

Live coverage is on Bigpond online tv

I have several friends there, so far, most are accounted for. Still waiting to hear further news. It is just awful, some 200 people are stuck in the collapsed PGG building, screaming etc. One friend went and got her kids from school, she has no gas to get around, but at least she has power, phone but not cellphone coverage. She has been living on her nerves these last few months since the last one, with the aftershocks happening, some while I am chatting to her. I can't imagine how shattered these people must feel.

Are there any DPC members living there? I know we have quite a few members from NZ. Are they accounted for? It looks like a truly horrendous situation.

Though it is not as big a magnitude as the sept one it is shallower and more closer to the central city of Christchurch. They are saying the devastation is much worse. I'm in Wellington not sure of any members in Christchurch. Here is our local online news

I've been many times to Christchurch. It is just shocking. Many New Zealanders live in Australia, I worked with quite a few. Australia is sending rescue teams, it is just a 3 hour flight. I hope they will get there in time to help rescue people trapped in office buildings in Christchurch CBD. Absolutely horrible.

Telecom NZ have just said they are making all their 280 public telephones across Christchurch free for local, national and mobile calls.

Lyttleton and Brighton apparently are both unlivable.
