If technically possible, maybe there could be two kinds of metadata attached to a photo, including one that records a camera's serial number or other identifier that can't be stripped -- like an invisible watermark.

The way files are held on any open system like say a PC its impossible. Its is possible to make a format that if edited out makes the data useless. At that point the whole thing mind as well be a signed format anyways. Even with that your talking about implementing a format and asking everyone to adopt it so that devices can see it. After that it gets cracked and no longer matters in regards to people who wish to be shady.
As far as implementing meta data in an existing format that most programs would ignore and not discard (many programs will have to be changed to have it not discard irrelevant data). That's possible, but it can still be purposely edited out. The advantage is if the claimed source still has the data, they have a hard time saying they got it from here but it didn't have it.

If something like what is proposed went through, I believe many of us would be forced to reconsider our opinion regarding watermarks ... :-( |
