Just saw this tonight when I was taking the dog out. Thought I'd grab a picture of a nice moon halo.

You know what they say about moon halos.........
"See a ring around the moon, rain or snow next day by noon". |

Nice. If you look even closer you can notice some color in there too! |

Ya I noticed that color, although I think the processing brought that out. You couldn't really notice it with the naked eye. I would have originally called this a moonbow, but I've learned that those are just rainbows that use the light of the moon. |

Right, technically not a rainbow. But, those ice crystals that form the halos can diffract just the same. Its just the moon is so dim relative to the sun that the human eye can't always see the color. Its just really cool your photo brought that out.
I once saw a sun dog so bright and strong it formed a perfect mini-rainbow (can't remember the technical name) right in the sky. Was driving....so no photo. :(

Halos are much like sun dogs. Look at THIS movie and see what the rocket does to the sun dog. The movie plays best if you let most of it download before trying to play it. |

Very nice picture!
Interestingly, just yesterday I got this interesting NASA article on sun dogs, and the effect of rocket exhaust passing nearby.
This article links to the same movie ...
