The trouble with that, is that much of Weston's work was landscapes, still lifes, nudes, a lot of things. The challenge, as proposed, is much narrower than that. Many of Weston's most fascinating images are elemental, abstracted images of fruits and vegetables, very classic and simple and pure. That's what the challenge proposer is after.

i was hoping someone would point this out. you can enter a landscape and it would fit the challenge if the guy had indeed some landscapes too. but would it be as fascinating as his most fascinating works? it would be subjective, but more or less, you'll know what to expect in comments and votes, the latter you may or may not care about.

what im saying is, we can leave the argument of whether it is abstract or not out of the equation. we can simply focus on whether or not an image is clearly recognizable as a tribute to the guy and his most fascinating works.

i respect that the original suggestion wants to focus on his abstract works, but if it would only cause confusion and debate, id rather drop it and simply settle for something that would more generally be acceptable as a description of his great works.

"This then: to photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a rock."

A relevant extract from Susan Sontag on Photography:

"... one of the perennial successes of photography has been its strategy of turning living beings into things, things into living beings. The peppers Weston photographed in 1929 and 1930 are voluptuous in a way that his female nudes rarely are. Both the nudes and the pepper are photographed for the play of forms - but the body is characteristically shown bent over upon itself, all of the extremities cropped, with the flesh rendered as opaque as normal lighting and focus allow, thus decreasing its sensuality and heightening the abstractness of the body's form; the pepper is viewed close-up but in its entirely, the skin polished and oiled, and the result is a discovery of the erotic suggestiveness of an ostensibly neutral form, a heightening of its seeming palpability."

All this talk about peppers is making two titles stick in my mind:

Five Little Peppers and How they Grew
Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers

Now, how to get rid of them.

Hmmm, if we did do a Weston take-off, and made it exclusively peppers, think of all the new pepper stories to come.

And, oh yes, FWIW, I like the idea of a Weston Black and White Abstract.

I'd really like to see this happen. Not sure if it's in the queue, as it were, but with all the repeats and food moustaches and so forth, a photography challenge would be cool.

I agree. I think this sort of challenge is beneficial for a ton of reasons. First, it makes people look at the history of photography. Second, it pushes us to try and emulate and experience notable works. Besides, this one in particular is an easy one for anybody. All it takes is some random object and a desk lamp...

But Louis, Tarot Cards (actually not a bad theme) was suggested two weeks ago, and we really needed a battery portrait challenge.

Yes, two weeks is really too long to wait for a Tarot card challenge. Shame!
