I'm going to New Orleans with a few friends in late October for 3-4 days. Last time I was there I stayed with relatives because of a wedding and didn't get to do much sightseeing/photography.
We plan on staying in a hotel in the French Quarter/Bourbon Street or the Garden District. Does anyone recommend a particular hotel? Also, which local attractions/cemeteries would be most appealing to a photographer? |

I was there last July 4th and found just wandering around the French Quarter itself to be a font of photographic opportunities.
I have a few of the photos I took there in my portfolio, the one looking down the street is on Royal Street from the Royal Cafe. Very good mushroom omlettes by the way.
I only did one of the cemetery tours and while it was nice we didn't stay long in each spot, so exploring wasn't much of an option. Had a much better time peeking into the shops and people watching in Jackson Square and doing the French Quarter thing.
Oh.. HIGHLY recommend Cafe duMonde (may have misspelled that) and the Mardi Gras Museum.

I was just in New Orleans and recommend that you select one of the better named hotels adjacent to the French Quarter. I used the Marriott, which is fine. And the price was fair too.
New Orleans recently earned or should I say, regained the claim to being the murder capital of the USA. Many of the murders occurred in or near the French Quarter. Most were drug related. So, common sense is strongly advised. This is not the city to be foolish in as it has its challenges.

From a photography point of view, it is wonderful. There are so many incredible and historic sites that demand your camera. I especially enjoyed the architecture. Have fun, be safe and do not overload yourself with cameras, lenses, and gadget bags, you will just make yourself an easy target.

lykofos,
If it were me, I'd send a PM to grigrigirl, asking about any particulars.
