My local camera shop has one (used) in stock and is offering it to me for a steal. I've been looking for a fast, all purpose inexpensive lens and this one seems to fit the bill.

Anybody know about this lens? I can't remember the site that has ratings on lenses. Any help there would be great too.

Thanks.

I looked at this lens and I was happy with it. I ended up going with the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 because I wanted the wider angle, but it looked like a good lens for the $$.

It̢۪s a decent lens for the money, especially if you have found a used one.

I found some reviews on it. It gets a rating as high as the Canon EF 2.8 24-70mm USM L lens! Costs a little less though (1/4 the price). ;-)

I called the store last night to tell them that was coming to pick it up, but they closed at 6pm. DOH! I'll be there when they open at 9:00 this morning. It better still be there!

Good luck! How much did you pay?

While it is definitely a lot less expensive, I wouldn't say it is rating quite as high as the Canon 24-70/2.8L...

The Canon rates out at "very good (4.26)", the Tamron with quite a bit of a lower score at "good (3.36)". And the AF speed on the Tamron is listed as "slow".

On the other hand, the Tokina 28-70/2.8 AT-X Pro SV rates out at "very good (4.12)" (but still has slow AF). Might be worth checking into that lens as well.

One of my co-workers (he has already photographed for Playboy and GQ)told me to keep my fingers off Tamron lenses. No idea why, but I think he knows, cos he was born with a camera in his hands.

I have used both lenses but neither terribly extensively. I would not say that the optical quality is quite on par with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L but it really isn’t far behind it either. For the money the Tamron is VERY hard to beat and unless you are making large prints or cropping heavily I doubt you will see much difference in the print quality in 4x6’s or 8x10’s. The build doesn’t feel as good on the Tamron and the AF is not quite as fast but as was pointed out it is ¼ the price.

It's listed at $700 (can$), and I got it for $350. I'm happy. I'll post some shots later. Today was my son's 4th birthday party, so I had a chance to use it for some indoor portraits.

These are the stats I found on PhotoZone:

f/2.8 Wide-angle zooms Optical Quality
Canon EF 2.8 24-70mm USM L 4.16 (3) = very-good
Canon EF 2.8 28-70mm USM L 4.15 (5) = very-good
Tamron AF 2.8 28-75mm LD XR Aspherical SP 4.14 (3) = very-good

Where did you get your info? Are we talking about the same lens?

Guess there is some conflicting information then.

I went to the link you provided, then under the top "Performance Surveys" section, click the first link, which says "Canon EOS".

A "Query Form" came up and I selected "Standard Zooms" and "Sort by Performance" and hit "Start Query!"...

Yeah, keep in mind the Performance Surveys are based on (scrutinized?) user input, so there'll be quite a bit of subjectivity there; with a large enough sample it's reasonable I suppose. The Lens Test Guide data is based on "formal lens test results" so it might be considered somewhat more objective and maybe even more accurate. Than again, test charts aren't like real user experience.

Well, what I really like about the Performance Surveys is the breakdown, so if you don't care about vignetting (esp. with FOV crop) you can take that part with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, there might be a mix and match of user experience (dslrs with different fov crops and film/full-frame sensors).

I got the info from the lens test guide. Seems to be quite some difference there.

Anyhow, there was no way I was putting down $2200 for a lens, but for what I paid, I think I'll be happy. So far, I've liked what I've seen. You tell me what you think. Here are some samples from today:

Alexander's Party

This one is my favorite

Nice images mariomel.

Thouse of you who have been citating some websides with lens rating could you please post a links for thous.

Congrats on the new lens Mario. Looks like you got a great deal. It retails for $700CAD at Henrys.com.

I bought a used Sigma 17-35mm one time. I found out why the owner decided to trade it in and get a 16-35mmL: it was way to soft. Just make sure you got a good copy. All my lenses are used: bought them all from e-bay.

I really like the shallow DOF your lens produces.

When looking at lenses, I always go to //www.photographyreview.com for user reviews.

The Tamron 28-75mm rates 4.67 out of 5 (21 reviews). Lots of happy users out there.

I never take the snobby approach to buying lenses, i.e. only Canon L lenses, etc. Most manufacturers have gems to offer, you just have to know which ones.
