For most institutions, the GRE scores are valid for 5 years only.

I took it at age 42. I highly recommend you get the GRE practice book (the one that comes with a CD). I got mine from the library.

I practiced the tests on the CD, looked at their hints for doing each section and I got a pretty decent score. It can be done - just practice first!

*edited for age... haha forgot how old I am... there goes the brain!*

Thanks for the info. I earned my biology degree in 1997 at 35 years old. I want to get masters along with a teaching certificate. I'll check out the practice books.

Thanks again.

I think doing the GRE is easier than doing the Master's schoolwork lol. I'm working on a MS via distance learning and I don't have the discipline for it so far.

Good luck on the master's!

I really, really REALLY can not stress the importance and necessity for doing a lot of studying for the test. You are not going to walk in and score 800 on the qualitative and quantitative portions without the appropriate work.

If you get the GRE books with lots of practice tests, you will be fine.

I agree with the recommendations to prepare. The older you are the harder these exams are. I have done the GRE and the GMAT. I am 54 years old.

The longer that you have been out of school the more knowledge that you have lost. "Knowledge must be used to be preserved".

These tests are far more difficult for older students. I think that I have a distinct advantage since I have gone to nine universities over the past 19 years and begin a third masters in September 2011. I did a MA in Communications and Technology and a MBA during the past six years. As well as loads of other learning. So, I am in the rhythm to learn, which helped a bit.

For both the GRE and the GMAT, I took preparation courses as well as studied the prep guides and did many passes at the prep tests as others have recommended.

You need to have a solid game plan to write the test as well. You need to control your time and manage your emotions as it is so easy to come off the rails in the writing process. Responding to several hundred questions over a four hour span is like running a marathon, you need to establish your own pace.

As you may know, the GRE General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills that are not related to any specific field of study. So, it is difficult to prepare perfectly or specifically. But, like an athlete, you can practice to get in shape and get a rhythm in place before you write the actual exam.

I heard that they are planning a refresh of the GRE test due to change on August 1, 2011. I went through an exam refresh years ago with my PMP exam. It was a nightmare. All of the available literature and preparation materials are for the current test and not the next version. It takes time for "quality" materials to get published. So, I urge you to take it now before the change while the prep content is still aligned to the actual test.

The math trips up most people, unless you use higher order math for work, like an engineer may do. So, figure out your areas of strength and weakness and the focus on improving weaker areas as well as improving strong areas.

Most schools will not accept a test result older than 5 years and ETS erases past test results every five years. Schools want the results from ETS so this is the de facto time frame, albeit some schools say they will accept older scores. I have never figured out how to provide them if ETS has erased them?

If I recall correctly, the GRE is less time than the GMAT and runs about 3 hours to write. Some argue that you can not be trained for the GRE by prep courses. I took the Kaplan course and it was okay. I also took prep courses at local universities and they can be better and more cost effect. The bottom line is that you need a game plan and sufficient time to prepare and drill. The more you are exposed to the GRE process and the type of questions that you can expect to see, the better you will succeed. Preparation is mandatory for mature students if you want to pass and get accepted.

Best wishes and good luck. You can pass and do very well. The devil is in the details. So, your outcome will depend on how well you prepare yourself to win in this game.
