For most people, but I haven't always entered a freestudy looking for a high score. I have several from last year that are among my favorites, but I also knew they would not attract broad appeal. They ended up in the high 5's but attracted some fantastic comments. I consider them to be more successful than many of my 6+ images. They did not need broad appeal.
Since I see some examples posted above, here are the ones I am talking about. I love these shots and the feedback told me I had nailed it.

I agree with the Free Study and Best of 2010. These have so many entries that I don't mind experimenting. But in topical challenges I'd rather go for the score :) |

Even in those, I have found that chasing popular appeal is a guessing game that I can't win. My experience recently has been that I should enter something that I like, not what I *think* others will. Interestingly, that's when I started nailing high averages more often. There's some logic to it, actually.

it seems that my votes go up over night, then drop throughout the day. i think people must be tired and not know what they're doing. more people should vote at night :-)

I'm quite happy with this score. It was an image that I liked, but didn't think others (in general) would appreciate as much as I did. This entry was more for fun than anything else and it's doing much better than I thought it would. Very content.

Really gotten a lot of love this week - score has gone from 4.7 to 5.07.
I know most consider a 5.0 to be a failure, but I'm super thrilled with this score! |
