The Facebook Security Setting You Should Change as Quickly as Possible

Yeah its always good to have HTTPS as an option in a public environment. Not so much a bother at home on a WPA2 encrypted network maybe. I never looked into it much but as i understand it unless the interception is being done further down the line then at home use is semi paranoid, though wouldn't ever do a bank transaction without!

curious as to why facebook doesn't make this a default setting. Why leave it up to the user to enable it?

Its very easy for it to fail, can cause access problems? I dunno, they don't expect all their users to be intelligent. Something as simple as the Date Time being set to the wrong year will make the certificate fail.

We have a 1 year old laptop here that syncs on windows 7 just fine but despite good clock batteries it looses time here and there, defective clock chip probably. Anyways I have a Vista machine that refuses to sync at all despite being up to date, etc etc. I think too many situations for too many people. Not enough to stop HTTPS from working but enough to be concerned with adding something on that can mess with a user.

Facebook problems seem to be getting worse. In the past 48 hours, I've received three spam-like email messages from friends who DID NOT send out the messages.

This has me alarmed. I have changed security settings to https:, as recommended by the OP. This morning, I changed my password to a much more complicated alphanumeric series with upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. Did this for my gmail account, too. (Different complicated password, of course.)

And, I've gone into my Facebook account and purged complete strangers. At one point, i may have approved some friend requests, because I didn't think there was much risk. Now, I feel there is quite a lot of risk.

Finally, I've stripped almost all data from my Facebook info. I think one has to assume that ANYONE may be able to view data, even if info is marked to be viewable by only a few. Better to be paranoid, than sidejacked or hijacked.
