I register all my domains at Namecheap. There are cheaper registrars but I like their interface the best. Domain names are around $10/year.
I host all my sites on JaguarPC servers. They have been around for a long time and have great support and uptime. Right now they have a hosting plan available for $11/3 months.
For free, check out Wordpress.

Use hostgator.com for everything. Couldnt say enough good things about their support- they are fantastic. Also, never had my site down, easy to use, pay 9.95 a month (they do have cheaper options) and $10 to buy the domain. Highly reccomended. |

I use and have had great luck and support with Green Geeks - unlimited space, traffic, and domains for less than $5 a month when paid annually at the moment.
edit - spelling

i'm so green at this. so you have to pay for a domain space and then hosting on top of that? is there one where you create a site on leave it to your own maintenance?
PS thanks all who have posted so far -- very helpful!

Hosting is one thing -- they provide storage space and servers for you.
Registration of a domain name is separate -- they associate your domain name with a numeric IP address and maintain "Name Servers" which allow people to type your domain name into their browser and find your site.
Hosting and registration can be from separate companies (the original model) or both can be provided bu the same company (the newer model, since name-regitration was un-monopolized).
If your internet provider offers (and you want to pay for) a "Static IP Address" you can host your site on your own computer at home with some server software (is/was built-in on Macs AFAIK) and some know-how ... |

I looked at BlueHost but decided not to go with them because they don't allow nudity, even tastefully done. I've heard this is because they are based in Utah where it's illegal for them to do so, but I'm not sure whether that's true or not. I have seen a few stories of people who had their account suspended because of some content, even if it was one of their users who posted a picture.
I don't really intend on running an adult site, but I don't want to be concerned about having my whole hosting account taken down by an exposed nipple. |

There's no such thing as a domain space. Hosting is the space (like renting an office for your business), and the domain is the name that people associate with it. You need both since people generally identify with Saintaugust's Pizza Parlor rather than 122 West Main Street, suite 300. Bluehost includes a domain name with their hosting plans (1and1 is similar). |

freehostingnoads.com as well as 000webhost have served me well over the years.
Purchase your own domain and redirect to their name servers then you have your own domain up and running in no time. |
