Someone was telling me that the $15/month data plan gets you absolutely nothing. That basically 5 updates a day on DPC would run your data plan into overages.
Does anyone have the verizon $15/month data plan, and can you actually do much on it?

"The report states that a new $15 data plan promotion will be offered beginning October 28th. The plan will include 150 megabytes of data and is expected to be offered through the end of the year. If a user goes over their allotted megabytes they will need to pay another $15 to receive a new bank of 250 megabytes.
The good news is that Verizon Wireless̢۪ unlimited data plan for smartphones will still be offered for $29.99. At least we can say that for now. The new $15 tiered data plan could be the first step to eliminating unlimited data plans and replacing them with tiered options."
From October, 2010. It appears $15 gets you 150 MB. I think you could go through that pretty quickly. |

Seems expensive to me - I was just sent this offer by my landline provider:
Free HTC Wildfire with our £15.32 a month tariff
â€Â¢ 500 texts and 100 minutes to any network every month
â€Â¢ 500MB mobile web
â€Â¢ Unlimited calls to other Virgin mobiles
â€Â¢ Enjoy unlimited calls from your Virgin Home Phone to your new mobile
Seems unusual for the States to be more expensive than the UK!
I must be one of the few people in the world who doesn't use a mobile! |

Mobile rates in North America tend to be more than those in the UK/Europe. At least the Canadian rates are.
$15/month doesn't get you much so if you do a lot of data stuff where WiFi is not available then it might not be worth the overage charges.
If you've used data services before examining your past usage would help determine if the 15/month plan would give you enough.

I've never had a data plan before, so I don't have anything on which to base it. I can't justify $30/month. So it's the $15 or nothing. But if it doesn't give you much...
I just have no feeling for what 150MB equates to in web browsing.

If you are doing all of your internetting on the 3G it may not be enough. We just got iPhones and for $15 we get 200MB. I used maybe 60MB in the first month. I was just sure to download apps and such while on a a wifi network either at work or at home and turned off pushes for any apps that requested them (except the free texting app I'm using). |

My thought is - if I am going to have a smartphone I am going to USE a smartphone. It is day 5 of my billing cycle and I have already used 684MB. I use the internet on a regular basis, stream podcasts, check email, play games, etc. Last month I used over 3000MB.
On the flip side, my husband does nothing but email on his phone - a lot of email because of his job - and he even used 304 MB last month -
So I would agree with the original poster that the 150MB/month would get you nothing unless you want to make certain that you switch to wi-fi whenever you are in your home/office and only use the 3G for back-up when on the road. |

I don't have a phone with data download so I'm just giving you my view on this.
I would suggest that that small a download is for checking email on the go.
Receive and reply to emails and a small amount of net surfing.
As said before.
Stick to wi-fi for anything large that needs downloading.
Don't open attachments that are huge unless it's a must, etc etc.
Leave the big stuff for home and wifi
If used in this manner you may find that it is ample.

My son got an HTC Incredible, with the $15 data plan. Even trying to be frugal, he had about 470M of traffic - says most of it was downloading apps for the phone, so we'll see this month. Nothing wrong with signing up for the $15 plan, and keeping a close eye on your usage - if it goes over, you can go online and change to the $30 unlimited plan effective the start of your current usage cycle. But watch it very carefully - if you miss doing that, it can be $$$$. |

I just got a two windows phone with the $15 a month data plan for me and my wife. with ATT we get 200MB a month each.
the phone has wifi, like every other smart phone out there. As soon as a walk in my door the phone automatically connects and stays on wifi the whole time.
the only time i really use data is in the car checking a traffic maps after i leave school, or reading facebook updates which are integrated into the phone away from home, also my wife uses an app to run and it barely uses any data at all, only if she downloads a map. most apps, if they are just newsreaders are easy on the data plan as well.
so far after 20 days, i have used 45mb and my wife 40mb or so, i just checked today. We are way under.
with 200MB a month you get about 6-7 MB per day, is barely enough for viewing webpages with pictures and definitely not enough for video. but if you are only hitting up an occasional map or checking weather, or some restaurant reviews, its definitely worth it.
So really it depends on what you plan to do but more importantly where you plan to do it. There are free wifis all over the place where i live, supermarkets, restaurants, stores, cafes at school there are even some in my office building...all free and open if i go over friends i just hop on theirs. Its actally rare fo rme to be somewhere there isnt a wifi.
If you aren't going to be doing a lot of web surfing or using any data intensive apps away from wifi, then its a perfect plan for people like me who have no real need for more than 200 mb or so.
ATT will send me texts when i hit 30, 60 and 90% of my use. and if i ever go over i only get hit with another $15, only $5 than their top plan.

Normally I am a "charge whatever the market will bear", free-market advocate, but this is one area where I think we are getting taken to the cleaners. With a usable data plan, I will be paying Verizon about $180/month for the 3 phones we use. That was a friggin car payment 20yrs ago! ...now get the hell off my lawn! |

think that's bad? wait until we get content access tiers. want to use facebook? add $2, how about netflix? add $5, how about your tube? add $2, or buy them all in one package for only $10!!!
Metro PCS already started... and Verizon is is trying to weasel out of the FCC ruling.
