ok...stop snorting
Last night I went to my both my C:HD and external MyBook HD, (first time yesterday, but I had been on them both about a wk and half ago) my thumbnails are randomly coming up...some are pictures they are all in order but some show up like this
then when I try to open one of the file/pictures this comes up....
we tried downloading the Nikon Camera RAW but that didn't fix it...
It has been working fine up to last wk-ish but all of a sudden it has stopped...I haven't done any changes to the computer, it is new but I've had it since Thanksgiving....
does anyone have any ideas? HELP PLEASE...Thank you |

that is weird, especially if it worked before...these are raw files?
looks like you're running win7? if so you can try downloading and installing the raw view from MS
link

yes, I can open my JPEG's through Fast Picture Viewer (we had thought that the trial version had run out, but discovered that the one that usually comes up is Windows Photo Viewer....) and of course I can open my PSD in my PSE8, I just can't open my RAW ones
ETA: and it's just weird how they are randomly coming up on the thumbnails...some with the pictures, some with whatever that is for a thumbnail...

I just don't get it as it was working fine last wk...I do know that when I got the computer my son-in-law downloaded something so I could view my RAW files in my drives, not sure which one he downloaded...I'm going to wait until my husband comes home and I will have him do the download as I don't want to bugger things up anymore (I know enough to be very dangerous...therefore I let him do the buggering....lol) |

If you want to see if it's the computer or the files, plug the external into another computer and see if the problem follows the files.
I know that's not a fix, but it can help in narrowing down the problem.

ok, I can do that...I did unplug the external file and take it with me this past wkend, but I never hooked it up to my laptop to work on anything (I know bad girl), but it still doesn't make sense that it is both the C drive and my E drive that are effected the same... |

they all open and it opens in Windows Photo Gallery...so it's my desktop that is the problem...at least that narrows it down.... |

just curious...how many out there are using Windows 7 - can open your RAW pictures WITHOUT third party software? from what I've read Nikon does not support RAW files in Window 7 64bit WITHOUT third party software....
True/False???
I know that my Windows 7 64bit was working like normal for at least 35-40 days after (last time I used it that I know of) I purchased my new computer. If I was using a trial version of something wouldn't they have bugged the pants off me to purchase it at the very least sent me an e-mail that it was ending??? And why 35-40 days???? |

If you both download and install Timbuktu you can. They used to have a full-featured 30-day trial version ... it is great for remotely observing or controlling a remote computer.

what I don't understand Paul...is that about a wk ago it was working fine (haven't been in my files since then) all the thumbnails looked right and I could open them....
shoot if I can at least "see them all" then I can import them to LR3...but I can't see them all |

Ja-9 I'm having the same problem. I can view jpg and other files but it will not let me view .CR2 RAW files. It goes to the same screen shot you posted in the your original post. I have had that problem since getting my new computer with win-7 back in September 2010. I also cannot run CS3. I have tried to fix both problem with no success.
I want to get a new camera when I can but I would have to get PS4 or LR and hope it lets me view the pictures. So I don't know if I should invest in a camera because of the cost of the software, not knowing if it will work. But I want so bad to be an active member of the community and enjoy taking pictures again. I may have to take the risk. |

Now you know why I use equipment until it breaks and software until it won't run on the replacement. Basically, I sacrifice speed for consistency.
When you use cutting-edge technology, expect to need a lot of bandages.â„¢ |

To review...
·Some thumbnails are not displaying correctly in explorer and photo viewer
·They were working correctly for a while after a program was installed (which was probably the codec to view raw NEF files)
·These thumbnails display correctly on another machine (which means it is not the files themselves)
·You get an error message for some files in windows photo view (which probably uses the same codec as explorer)
Since you know it's not the files, my advice would be to reinstall the software being used to read the files, in this case the codec. Here is Nikon's version.
Be sure to uninstall the old codec, which may be the same version, but is possibly corrupted. This is probably in the Control Panel under "Uninstall a program."
I would uninstall, reboot, install, reboot and try again.
Let us know, I'm hooked now. :-D |

Computers/programs can just be out and out frustrating - working one minute then the next flaking out.
I second the suggestion to uninstall (making sure the full file is removed) and install again. One or several files may have been corrupted with Windows Updates or mayhap your security systems may have gone and deleted one file. - For example, 2 months ago Mcafee did a scan came up with a false positive that Topaz Denoise was a Trojan program and straight out deleted it!!! Husband found the key and reinstalled it and Mcafee up and deleted it again. Got the key and found that there was a newer updated version of Topaz Denoise and installed that with no problems.
Hope the reinstall works. |
