I just sold my first photo - yay! :) I've sold a few stock photos but this is a sale for a customer that wanted it mounted and framed 22" wide - including passepartout and frame. She wants it in her dining room.
She also wants me to sign it. The print shop that printed it and is now about to mount it suggested that most photographers sign it directly on the photo while others do it on the passepartout.
Any suggestions? I seem to think it might be better to sign the passepartout.
Here's the picture (the frame here is of obvioulsy not printed):

I've seen it both ways. I sign mine on the photo. |

I sign, number and add the year of image capture to the lower right corner area on the print itself. Depends on the image, but I usually allow for a run of 250, although I don't print the whole run, of course. I just print them as I need them for inventory and keep track of the next number in the numbered series. I used to use an ultra fine pt. black Sharpie, but for the past three years, I've been signing with an Opaque Paint Marker gold or silver.
The Liquid Gold and Liquid Silver pens work on any surface, but are super great on the canvas giclées. |

Congrats on the sale! I would probably sign the photo. You never know when it might be reframed. |

Numbered (Ltd.Eds), date (by year) and signed en recto with acid-free pen (black).
Title and year on the left below the print on the overmat with pencil; Signature also below the print on the right with pencil.
Certificate of Authenticity in envelope attached to frame backing.

Thanks for all of the responses. A lot of good info. I think I'll opt to sign on the photograph itself. |

I sign the front of the print to, just like artists and include the year it was taken.
For images with special meaning I might include a short printed write-up that is usually attached to the frame backing or back of the print itself. Examples of that would be information of historic or geologic significance.

Congratulations on the sale. It is a beautiful photo and will look very nice in a dining room. A comforting shot, very compatible with a pleasant eating experience. Very nice. |
