A cycle of even length has chromatic number two. This is easy. Consider a cycle of length n where n is even. Number the vertices u1, u2, ...u_n. u_n is, of course, adjacent to u1. Assign one color to the even-numbered vertices and one color to the odd-numbered vertices.
A cycle of odd length has chromatic number three. This might not be instantly intuitive. Consider a cycle of length m where m is odd. If we color even-numbered vertices one color and odd-numbered vertices another color, then u_m and u1 are adjacent and the same color. The way to deal with this is to assign a third color to u_m. There is no way to color a cycle of odd length with just two colors. |
