Cape Disappointment is located at the southernmost tip of Washington State's coastline on the North side of the Columbia River. It has two lighthouses less than two miles separated.

I met up with fellow DPCers Daryl and Tina Faust for a little photo safari there on New Year's Eve:

The Cape Disappointment Lighthouse overlooks the Columbia River bar, one of the most treacherous in the world, to help guide ships into the river. The North Head Lighthouse overlooks the Pacific Ocean providing guidance for north-south shipping traffic.

A complete gallery of images captured at Cape Disappointment on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day is found here:

I liked this ocean sunset captured at Ecola State Park on New Years Day taken on the way back:

Nice stuff!
Sounds like y'all had a great shoot. What was this, the GTG for displaced Arizonians? ;-)

Is there an entry in the lot? I am sure one of these images will do for the Best of challenge.

Beautiful sky and well composed group of shots.

JulietNNN...
I would be thrilled to do more photo safari's with you. But do you think that you, a now world-famous mega-ribbon winner, could lower her standards to be seen with a lowly rapscallion like me?? Btw, I looked... and I don't know why, since I processed pictures, that I never uploaded any of the ones we took of petroglyphs at Saguaro NP. It's just a guess on my part, but that might explain why you haven't seen any. ;) I will correct that oversight and send you a link. Don't hold your breath, though... they aren't that good. :) I'll have to spruce them up to be presentable.

Tina and Daryl have become entrenched Northwesterners now. Its always great for me to get to see and talk with them.

Nope, there is no entry in either that lot or any the other lot. I leave the good photography up to the good photographers but still occasionally share a few shots that may or may not be of interest to some DPCers.

Where is that in relation to the bridge across the river at Astoria? I've driven that route a few times, but didn't know about any lighthouses there; last trip I did get some decent shots at Haceta Head, further down the coast in Oregon.

It's only a few minutes northwest of the bridge. I camped there last year, but I think it was pretty wet that weekend.

Hmmm ... can't believe I missed it. I'll have to check the map more carefully before I go that way again. Thanks for the info.

The drive is a bit circuitous but is about 11-12 miles from the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Just drive north(left) on hwy 101 off the bridge to Ilwaco, turn left on Lake Street at a marked sign and follow the other signs about 3 miles to the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and nearby Lewis and Clark Discovery Center.

If you get to Long Beach, WA then you drove past the turnoff.

Btw, GeneralE, I used my hiking GPS to drive right to it. I marked waypoints for the route on Google Earth and then downloaded them into my GPS before I left. :)
